Smith writes: 'Sir | I have sent you an impression of Sr. Francis Burdett for your portfolio & one in an unfinished state of Mr. Tooke which the bearer will bring back or call again for & a compleat impression shall be sent you in a ten day, as soon as they can be printed, the plate is finished but none taken off yet, the unfinished one will do for a certain purpose & a finished one much the better for your portfolio'.…

Each plate is followed by a short critique by Thackeray. Thackeray was an old friend of Marvy, a French artist, who took refuge in London after the chaos of 1848. Theodore Taylor's 1864 biography of Thackeray mentions the history of the book: "A fine and skillful landscape painter himself, M. Marvy, while here, as a means of earning a living, made a series of engravings after the works of our English landscape painters. The publishers, however, would not undertake the work without a series of letter-press notices of each picture from Thackeray; and the latter accordingly added some criticisms which are interesting as developing his theory of this kind of art" (p.32). Stocks begins the letter: 'I beg to renew my agitation on the subject of Webster's picture of the "Dame School", as I am now ready to proceed with those parts in which it is desirable to refer to the original'. He will be grateful if Hogarth will 'put this matter in the proper train for its accomplishment'. He hopes that 'Mr. Vernon [the art collector Robert Vernon] may be induced to part with the picture if but for a short time'. Even a loan for 'a month or six weeks' would assist Stocks in his work.…

Etching, with watercolour, with ruled border, on laid paper now on Japanese paper There are at least two states of this print. The British Museum have an uncoloured impression titled:'Vue du Chteau de Chillon' beneath the image; and lettered, " Genve chz F.G. Lardy." and "et se trouve maintenant Amsterdam chz F.G. Lardy et chz Joseph Buffa et Compag" which presumably implies that Lardy moved to Amsterdam. The Musee d'Art et D'Histoire in Geneva have a fully coloured version, titled,'Vue du chteau de Chillon sur le lac de Genve au Canton de Berne' and lettered underneath 'Grav d'aprs le Tableau original de Mr. Hubert de Genve, et se trouve Basle chez Chf: de Mechel'.Both the museum in Geneva and the British Museum suggest the artist of the original painting was Jean Baptiste Louis Hubert of Paris, [1801-1865], but when you consider the birth date of Hubert, he could not be the artist.…
