Mac-Mahon (1808-1893) war französischer Marschall im Deutsch-Französischen Krieg und schlug 1871 den Aufstand der Pariser Commune nieder, später zweiter Präsident der Dritten Republik. Der Photograph Le Jeune übernahm 1864 das Parise…r Studio des russischen Daguerreotypisten und Photopioniers Sergej L. Levitzky, als dieser nach seiner zweiten Pariser Zeit entgültig nach Russland zurückkehrte, verkaufte es aber bereits 1874 wieder.
La Simplicité (hier jedoch ohne Titel). Stahlstich nach dem Gemälde von Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805). Vortitel für das Album "Les Lianes. Album Mosaique" (Titeleindruck in Unter- und Oberrand), achtes und letztes der Albenreihe "La Mosaique" von Ernest de Limagne des Pariser Verlegers H. Mandeville (das Album enthält gestochene Stadtansichten und Kunstreproduktionen).

34,3 x 25,2 cm (Blattgröße). Auf dickerem Velin. Wenige, vereinzelte und sehr schwache Stockfleckchen auf der Blattvorderseite, die unbedruckte Rückseite jedoch etwas deutlicher stockfleckig. Der später vielfach (vor allem auch in England) wieder aufgelegte Stich erschien hier wohl zum ersten Mal. Der französische Künstler war S…chüler von Henriquel-Dupont an der École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Seit den frühen 1830er-Jahren lebte er in England und arbeitete dort für De La Rue & Co, ein heute noch existierendes nichtstaatliches Traditionsunternehmen zur Herstellung von (u.a.) Briefmarken und Banknoten. Dort gravierte er z.B. ein Bildnis von Königin Victoria, das auf frühen Briefmarken Großbritaniens und seiner Kolonien verwandt wurde. Meyerbeer's diary records (25 May 1853) a visit 'from Raoul Allary, who makes wind instruments. He is an opponent of Sax, and came to me because he had heard that I had spoken to the emperor on Sax's behalf' (1999 English translation of volume for 1850-1856). A pencil note at the head of the present letter identifies the subject… as 'Louise Gned / 4 Rue [de] Bellefond [Paris]'. Gned (b.1810) was an Austrian soprano from a musical/theatrical family, who faded into obscurity. (Her sister Nina (1811-1874) was also an opera singer, and was married to the baritone Zacharias von Poißl.) Meyerbeer writes that he has just heard that there is a 'place de Choriste vacante à Votre Châtre', and takes the liberty of recommending to Allary's attention 'la personne qui Vous remettra ces lignes'. He describes her as 'une excellente musicienne, ancienne prima donna qui a chanté sur les premiers théâtres d'Allemagne'. It is only by 'des revers de fortune' that she is at the moment reduced to applying for the 'modeste position de Choriste'. He can personally guarantee that she is an 'excellente musicienne et elle avoit aussi quand je l'ai entendue, une très belle voix'. As she is well-acquainted with the Italian language, and has also sung in Italian theatres, 'elle pouvait encore être chargé de petits rôles'. He ends by explaining that his right arm has been troubling him for some weeks, and it this that has forced him to dictate the letter. La lett…re est signée par Louis de Fontanes, premier grand-maitre de l'université et addressée à Monsieur l'Archevêque de Malines. [3] La lettre annonce l'envoi des deux textes offerts ici: [1] Le Palmares- [2] L'Oratio sur le marriage de Napoleon avec Marie-Louise. L'archevêque de Malines était Dominicus de Pradt , nommé par Napoléon.

Paris, atelier d'Edouard Baldus, ca. 1855-1857, collection de 13 photos format ca. 44 x 32,5 cm. (collées sur 13 cartons) avec collection de 287 photos plus petites, collées sur en total 47 cartons. La pluspart des grandes photos sont signées avec le cachet fac-similé nr. 5 du photographe en usage pendant 1855 - 1858. (Voyez Cat…alogue Edouard Baldus, photographe, exposition Paris 1995. pp 56 - 66.; pour le cachet pp. 229 ). Belles épreuves en parfait état pour la pluspart des photos. Seulement qq. grandes photos ont le carton avec des rousseurs (jamais sur le photo) ou le carton légèrement sal. Il y un (1) carton des petites photos qui a été partiellement déchiré avec également des photos déchiréés . Les cartons avec le cachet du collectionneur - architecte Anversois Frans Baeckelmans ( 1835 - 1896 ). Cet architect, frère de Louis Baeckelmans avait déjà avant 1870 formé une grande collection des photos architecturales. Les deux frères se laissent inspirer par la Renaissance pour leurs propres projets en style Neo-Renaissance/ Neo Baroque. (Un exemple: l'ancien Palais de la Justice d'Anvers, inspiré par le Louvre - Pavillon Richelieu - Pavillon Sully ). Il est exceptionelle de trouver une collection des photos de Baldus du Louvre ayant été formé dans le temps de sa genèse et ayant servi d'inspiration pour son premier acheteur - collectioneur. Light toning, somewhat heavier in places, light foxing in a few places, light edgewear to preliminaries and final leaves, light soiling to title page. Annotations to approximately thirty leaves of interleaves and text in neat contemporary hand. $1,500. * Third printing. The 1808 Code d'Instruction Criminelle, a code of criminal procedure, was one of the four codes of civil and criminal law issued under Napoleon's direction after the Code Napoleon (Code Civil, 1804). The annotations, the latest dated 1827, range from a few words to several interpretive paragraphs. Most of these note modifications to the articles by imperial decrees or court decisions. The most extensive annotations, which fill three full interleaves in a tiny hand, concern juries. An issue with 78 stipple-engraved colour-printed plates by Gaitte after designs by the author. Contemporary mottled calf; gilt; lightly worn. First editions of both volumes printed in colour of this exquisite emblem book on Greek and Roman gods, their attributes and qualities. Each deity or virtue is illustrated by the name calligraphically composed and ingeniously entwined with pictorial symbols. Madame de Genlis (1746-1830) became governess to the future king, Louis-Philippe, in 1782, instilling in him liberal ideas. Her teaching anticipated modern methods particularly in her use of visual equivalents to absorb knowledge in a way best suited to the individual. Favourable to the Revolution, she nevertheless spent six years abroad between 1793 and 1799 when Napoleon honoured her with a pension of 6000 francs and apartments at the Arsenal. The present publication draws inspiration from icons of empire. The work was issued in black-and-white, with a few copies produced in delicate colour printing. We are offering the coloured issue. Several plates are signed by the engraver (Antoine Joseph) Gaitte (b.1753) who, among others, worked for the architect, Claude Nicholas Ledoux. A well preserved, fresh set; with contemporary armorial bookplate of the politician and bibliophile, Alexandre-Charles-Omer Rousselin de Corbeau, comte de Saint-Albin (1773-1847) incorporating motto, Nil Nisi Virtute , inside front cover of each volume.
