Produced by John Wilson and Son's University Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts and printed on French-folded pages joined in tandem, now divided. Rubáiyát over unnumbered pages carrying the 101 quatrains of Edward FitzGerald's version enriched with lovely illustrations around the quatrains by Florence Lundborg, all of the other leaves have an elaborate border. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original embossed brick red cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back, lemon end papers. 12mo. 6½ x 4¼. Merriman was educated at Winchester College and Brasenose College, Oxford; and ordained in 1833. He was curate then Vicar of Street, Somerset until he emigrated to South Africa. He rose to become Archdeacon of Grahamstown, then Dean of Cape Town before being elevated the Episcopate. Conflict arose between Merriman, who was at this time the Bishop of Grahamstown and Frederick Williams, Dean of Grahamstown regarding the status of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa versus the Church of England and the validity of the appointments of bishops. Dean Williams then excluded Bishop Merriman from his Cathedral. This action resulted in many court cases which Williams won. Contains tissue-guarded colour frontispiece of Krelli his wife and counsellor, (iv), 200 pp + 16 pp publisher's catalogue with 2 further tissue-guarded colour plates, hand-coloured fold-out map dated 1850 which shows Durban as 'D'Urban', provinces as 'Amazula', 'Sovereignty Beyond the Orange River', 'Beaufort', 'Clanwilliam', and 'Uitenhage'. SIGNED by the author to Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury and Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister for the United Kingdom three times over a thirteen year period 'To The Lord R, Cecil - with the kind regards of the Bishop of Cape Town'. From Robert Gascoyne-Cecil's private library with family crest to the front paste down, illustrated with a safari hat, six feathered arrows, spiral red and white pole and name beneath 'Robert Gascoyne-Cecil'. LLOYD, George Thomas (1809-1871). Thirty-Three Years in Tasmania and Victoria being the Actual Experience of the Author interspersed with historic jottings, narratives, and counsel to emigrants. London: Houlston and Wright, 1862. 8vo., (7 6/8 x 5 inches). Fine folding lithographed frontispiece map "Emigration Map of the World" with original hand-colour in full. Original publisher's maroon cloth, gilt and blind (a little rubbed). First edition. "The life of the lord of a Tasmanian manor in the early days, from 1822 to 1829, was not, however, replete with unalloyed happiness. Indeed, during that period, a settler's life was not only fraughte with discomforts and difficulties, but was attended with considerable danger, from the spears of the wily savages, and from the predatory visits of outlawed convicts and Bushrangers. "Settlers in the interior were consequently ever in an unenviable state of agitation and alarm. Their energies were literally cramped, for the reason, that, they were compelled at all times, morning, noon, and night, to be well armed and ever on the alert, as they valued their lives and property. Whilst much tat and good generalship were required in devising the most efficient mode of fortifying their position, it was necessary to clear away every tree, log, or thick shrub, which might possibly afford shelter to the enemy within ball-range" (page 171). Gefaltet. - Nach seinem Debüt 1831 in Darmstadt wurde Hendrichs bis 1837 als erster Liebhaber nach Frankfurt/Main engagiert, dann spielte er bis 1840 in Hannover und bis 1844 in Hamburg. Seine Lebensstellung fand er am Hoftheater in Berlin, wo er bis 1868 in oft heroischen Rollen (Tell, Faust, Götz, Egmont) tätig war. Nach seiner Pensionierung als Königlicher Hofschauspieler im selben Jahr war er gelegentlich noch am Berliner Victoria-Theater tätig, dessen Direktor er 1871 wurde.

Er trat somit für die Schaffung einer parlamentarischen Monarchie mit starker Volksvertretung und für eine bundesstaatliche Verfassung Deutschlands in großdeutscher Gestalt ein. - Leicht gebräunt an den Rändern, leicht braunfleckig entlang der mittigen vertikalen Faltlinie.
