Charming letter to the socialite Sophie Duvaucel, apologizing for missed appointments due to "a very bad sore throat" and a meeting with his friend Sutton Sharpe the younger, announcing to "court her" on Saturday, also asking for "a drawing by M. Fielding", probably the English painter Copley Fielding: "Il ne fallait rien moins qu'un mal de gorge très conséquent et qui menaçait de devenir une esquinancie, pour m'empêcher d'aller lundi présenter mes hommages à Mademoiselle Sophie. Mr Sharpe m'a empêché de la voir aujourd'hui, et demain je suis retenu toute la matinée. Samedi j'aurai l'honneur de lui faire ma cour, et je tacherai d'être assez aimable pour qu'elle veuille bien me prêter un dessin de Mr Fielding". - Sophie Duvaucel (1789-1867) was the stepdaughter of the famous anatomist Georges Cuvier. Je trouve que vous avez donné à Miss Julie un trop grand caractère. La fin ne répond pas au commencement, et la métamorphose est trop subite. Je voudrais pour la justifier que vous eussiez mis quelques préparations dans les premières scènes. Il me semble que vous avez voulu donner à votre prima donna, des motifs qui la fissent valoir et qui montrassent la flexibilité de son talent. Peut-être ce changement de caractère est-il une bonne chose pour la scène; au point de vue du naturel, je l'admets difficilement.
