The letter begins: 'Want of health induced me to retire from Parliament in opposition to the wishes of my kind constituents and hurrying me from Town as soon as my votes had been given for the Liberal candidates at the Kent Surrey Essex and Middlesex Elections - una…voidably deprived me of the interesting though mournful pleasure of attending your final lecture at Finsbury Chapel. There should I have desired to be present and publicly to have expressed my intense sympathy and cordial esteem.' While he is unable to bid Buckingham farewell, he hopes that 'every doubt and fear that may flit athwart your mind may be disappointed and that every hope of a prosperous progress and happy conclusion may be surpassed'. He ends with pious wishes for Buckingham's 'protracted pilgrimage and arduous toils'. In 1837 Buckingham retired from Parliament, where he had been Member for Sheffield since 1832, and went on a four-year tour of North America.

List of subscribers, half-titles to volume 1 and 3 only (as usual). 295 hand-colored lithographed plates by Gauci from drawings by Vishnupersaud, Gorachaud and others (plates 222/223 constitute one folding plate), one double-page engraved map…(some minor spotting to tissue guards). Contemporary quarter green morocco gilt (rubbed). First edition, one of only 294 copies published, an unusually bright and attractive copy. Wallich, Roxborough's successor as superintendent of the East India Company's botanic garden at Calcutta: "head of the noblest botanical garden in the world, supplied with a large staff of collectors and artists, and with provision for travelling expenses on a liberal scale, . applied himself with indomitable zeal and industry to the extension of the garden, the investigation of the East India Company's vast and rapidly increasing dominion, and the establishment of a correspondence and exchange of living and dead plants upon a scale which for magnitude and efficiency has never been surpassed." (Obituary in "Proceedings of Royal Society of London" 1856). He travelled extensively in Penang, Singapore, and Burma. As a result his "Plantae Asiaticae rariores" was the first to bring images of the exotic flora of the Indian subcontinent to the attention of curious Europeans, particularly the British, for whom India was an increasingly important part of their Empire. At the Calcutta garden Wallich trained native artists to make botanical drawings, and one of them, Vishnu Prasad or Vishnupersaud, accompanied him on several journeys. Nearly all of the illustrations in the "Plantae Asiaticae rariores" are the work of these Indian draughtsmen, and are so vivid and vigorous that they make most other plant drawings look insipid by comparison" (Coats, "The Book of Flowers", 109). Despite the fact that Martin has 'given the Credit of every improvement in the Serv…ice', Napier happens to know 'that other people are deserving of more credit than him', and he wishes to 'bring forward some great names like yours' to 'the Lords & the Country' at the second reading of the Navy Officer Bill. Asks Brown if he introduced 'the Iron Tanks for water now used in the ships Holds'. Asks 'What reward did you ever get for the Cables & how long have you been allowed to supply the Navy & to what extent?' Postscript relating to 'Dundonald' [Lord Cochrane, the Sea Wolf] who "is to be restored immed[iately]>" [Apparently he was dismissed in 1814 "following a conviction of fraud" but restored in 1832 as per this letter.

Golbery bearbeitet. Den zweiten Band über das Departement Bas-Rhin mit den vier Arrondissements Schlettstadt, Strassburg, Weissenburg und Zabern entsprach, verfasste der Strassburger Archäologe J. G. Schweighäuser. Golbery; the second by the Strasbourg archeologist J. G. Schweighäuser. The eighty chalk lithographs mostly by Louis Pierre A. Bichebois and Chapuy illustrate topographic views of towns and villages, cathedrals, castles etc. embedded into romantisized sceneries. - A supplementary volume with eight additional plates and 24 p. of text published later is not present here. - Somewhat foxed in margins. A very nice copy in red halfmaroquin.
