Inside previous owners inscription in pen to front free end paper, written on title pages to parts 1 and 2 "EW bullinger from the authoress". Presumably this is E.W. Bullinger 1837 -1913 (Ethelbert William Bullinger AKC, an Anglican clergyman, biblical scholar, ultradispensationalist theologian and author of 'The Witness of the Stars' and other works). There are some later notes to margins in pen to pages 9-23 in part two, the fold out chart has old tape repair and another small tear to side with foxing to plate and surrounding pages, otherwise all pages with full edge gilt in very good clean condition. 'Mazzaroth' explores the significance and symbolism of the constellations in the context of divine revelation and biblical prophecy. Rolleston contends that the constellations hold a deeper spiritual meaning that has been obscured by associations with pagan mythology and a lack of understanding of their original intent. Generally believed to be the signs of zodiac and by passing through each sign, a person with a full understanding of the constellations and their meanings can interpret God's message, the book was published in its entirety in 1865, a year after her death, which would make the inscriptions possible as parts 1,2 + 3 were published in 1862. Very scarce. Inscribed by Author(s).

In den Warenkorb2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Elton, on reverse of second leaf, to 'John Taylor Esq.' (Taylor had assumed the editorship of the London Magazine on the death by duel of John Scott in February 1821.) Elton begins by informing Taylor that he has 'not been able yet to manage the Batrachomyomachia to my mind'. (Elton's translation of 'The Battle of the Frogs and Mice' would appear anonymously in the issue of October 1821, as the second of a series named 'Leisure Hours'.) He has instead 'sent some chit-chat to serve as an introduction'. ('On Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' appeared in September 1821 as the first of the series.) He intends this as 'the first of occasional desultory papers of criticism, poetry, or the like: a specimen or two of the Battle of Frogs may form the second of the series'. Changing the subject, he now declines two books Taylor has sent him to review: he feels that too much has already been said about Madame de Stael, and he has 'already administered the ferula to her somewhat roughly'. He is 'equally diffident about Bonaparte's literary character', and asks whether 'Mr Hazlitt, or Leigh Hunt' are not 'the fittest men to undertake it'. He feels that to 'enter fully' into Taylor's 'plan relative to the Monthly Literature seems to require the interchange of sentiments in conversation', and that this is 'one of the disadvantages of a periodical contributor residing in the country'. He suspects that 'a London domicile' is 'necessary for the convenient and ready arrangement and execution of this sort of monthly summary'. He has been 'thinking of some regular supply of poetry, translated or original, independent of the incidental passages in the Leisure Hours', but has not yet 'ascertained either my plan or my powers'. In the first part of a postscript, he asks 'What is Knickerbocker? [Washington Irving] & is he worth reviewing?' This appears to be a reference to a footnote to the 'Epistle to Elia' by 'OLEN', published in the August 1821 issue of the London Magazine; the footnote also discusses two readings of that poem, thanks Taylor 'for the Magazine', and ends 'It is a pity the writer who so ably reviewed Crabbe, does not continue his "Series of Living Poets.".

In den Warenkorb3pp., 12mo. Bifolium on mourning paper. Good, on lightly-aged paper. He writes to thank Gardiner for sending him 'a copy of your printed but unpublished Report to His Majesty's Government on the danger of governing Gibraltar as a Colony'. Gardiner's report 'forms an appropriate termination' to his 'administration of the affairs of the "Rock," & I shall read it with the interest and attention due to your long Experience in that Fortress'. He ends by sending his compliments to Lady Gardiner. According to the Oxford DNB: 'In 1854 the committee of merchants at Gibraltar protested to Lord Aberdeen's government against Gardiner's interference with the Gibraltar trade, which he described as contraband and sought to render more reputable. The correspondence, together with a long report by Gardiner entitled 'Gibraltar as a fortress and a colony', was printed as a parliamentary paper (Parl. papers, 1854, 43). A polemical pamphlet, replying to the report, was distributed gratis by the committee of merchants in 1856.'.

In den WarenkorbThe letter announces the transfer to Berlin of 'Monsieur de Wagner', London Chargé d'Affaires of the the Kingdom of Württemberg, resident at 42 Alpha Place, Regent's Park. The recipient Sir John Coxe Hippisley, whom George III had described as a 'busy man' and 'grand intriguer', had retired from public life two years previously, but was clearly still involved in diplomatic affairs. 2pp, 4to. Bifolium. Forty-one lines of neatly-written text, addressed to 'Sir J C Hippisley Bart. | Lower Grosvenor Street.' On aged and worn paper, with short closed tears at edges of folds. On paper with two prominent circular watermarks, one a regal eagle with motto 'Gott bewahre sein Reich', the other a portrait of 'Friedrich Wilhelm III Koenig von Preussen'. Wagner begins with 'the most humble and anxious apology' for his late letter, which he hopes to excuse by explaining the 'circumstances': 'Soon after my arrival in Stuttgart, I had the honor to see the King, and to deliver your letters and parcels; I delivered also those to the Queen Dowager [Augusta of Brusnwick, wife of Frederick I, who had died in 1816] in her own hands, as well as to Baron Maucler, who probably has written to you since'. Wagner delayed writing to Hippisley, as Maucler had 'promised me a letter for you'. Wagner was 'received very graciously and promoted to the rank of Councillor of Legation'. A bout of ill health was cured by a two-month tour of Switzerland. 'The King and Queen, as you will have heard, were in Italy, and derived benefit from the baths, tho' as yet without the desired effect for the prospect of the throne' (i.e. no pregnancy). On Wagner's return to Stuttgart, 'the situation as Chargé d'Affaires at Berlin was offered to me, under favorable conditions', which he accepted. The previous holder, Count Mandelsloh, is to be Wagner's 'second successor in London', and will 'present you this himself, and I beg to recommend him to you most particularly, for you will find him worthy in every respect of the kind reception and confidence with which I have been honored by you myself'. He will write to Hippisley 'more at length on another opportunity, when I shall have more leasure [sic]'. In the meantime he presents his respects 'to Lady and to Miss Hippisley as well as to Mr. Hippisley'. He ends with an expression of the 'due sense of gratitude for the kindness you have conferred on me'.
