In den WarenkorbOn wove paper roughly eleven inches by seven and three-quarters; dimensions of print roughly seven inches by four and a half. Image clear and unaffected, on paper aged and creased, with some staining to extremities. Smith's monogram in bottom left-hand corner. The figure is formally dressed, in frock-coat and stockings, with his hat tucked under his left arm. Clearly a portrait, but of whom is uncertain: it is not among the six works by Smith catalogued by the National Portrait Gallery. A charming evocation of print culture in the early part of the nineteenth century.

First Canadian Edition. This anonymous pamphlet was issued under the direction of the London representatives of the North West Company to counter charges of unwarranted aggression and destruction of the Selkirk settlement on the Red River, levelled against them by John Halkett in his Statement Respecting the Earl of Selkirk's Settlement (1817). The Narrative presents a brief outline of the establishment and growth of the Selkirk Colony from 1812, and attempts to defend and justify the North West Company's actions as the natural consequence of the encroachments, hostilities and provocations of Lord Selkirk and the Hudson's Bay Company. Although sometimes attributed to Simon McGillivary and Edward Ellice, the elder, the work was probably prepared by Samuel Hull Wilcocke, "a hack-writer in the employ of the North West Company". Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. pp. 1 p.l., [v]-xxv, 225, [1]blank, 203, [1]blank, 48. 19th century calf (some wear to spine). First London Edition of the controversial Selkirk trials. Following the violent attack on the Red River settlement and massacre at Seven Oaks in 1816 of Governor Semple and twenty of his men, Lord Selkirk instituted legal proceedings against the North West Company. The subsequent trial was little more than a farce. All of the North West Company's influence and power was brought to bear on behalf of its employees and partners; some prisoners were released, others escaped, and the place of trial was shifted from Lower Canada to York, where the Company was linked through family ties with some of the province's leading figures. The delays and setbacks seriously eroded Selkirk's finances and health, and the trial did not finally take place until 1818. Each of the accused was acquitted, and several months later, Lord Selkirk, along with his agent Miles Macdonnell and other Selkirk supporters, were indicted for conspiracy to ruin the trade of the North West Company, and Selkirk himself was fined 2,000 pounds for damages. The Report is divided into three parts: I - The Trial of Paul Brown and François Firmin Boucher; II - The Trial of the Accessories: John Siveright, Alexander Mackenzie, Simon Fraser; III - The Trial of John Cooper and Hugh Bennerman. The postscript relates the indictment of Selkirk and the preface contains a defence of the North West Company against the 'calumnies' of the press. Lande 1367. Peel 112n. Sabin 79016. A later but fuller issue of the work, with forty-eight rather than the usual twenty-three plates. Some of the plates were republished in 1817 under the title Vagabondiana; Or, Anecdotes Of Mendicant Wanderers Through The Streets of London., which contained thirty-three. Smith's etchings are among the earliest attempts to depict the poor of London in a realistic way, serving as fore-runners to Busby's Costumes of the Lower Orders of London (1820) and Mayhew's London Labour and London Poor (1861-62). They present "a dramatic survey of street folk, blind beggars, cripples, the indigent poor of all kinds.and hawkers of trifles, observed with objectivity."
