Martyn, Numa], author and educationist, was an extraordinarily industrious author and published a spate of guides, grammars, miscellanies, a sequence of admirably abridged tours, travels, and histories, a women's magazine, and a newspaper, the Oxford University and City Herald (1806), as well as numerous essays on education. F. Martyn, Numa] author and educationist who in 1801 published his most famous work, The English Spelling Book. To appeal to children it had fine woodcuts by Thomas Bewick, and simple and amusing moral stories for them to read. Bound in original red cloth, stamped in blind on both boards with gilt vignette of two children on upper board. Edges gilt. Condition: a bit worn yet sound and entire. Some fraying at spine ends. Owner's inscription on front endleaf. Plate somewhat soiled in margins. Anthology of verse intended to build moral character, such as Isaac Watts's severe "Duty to God and our Neighbors" and "The Advantages of Early Religion," beloved by children everywhere. Yet some liberality slips ithrough, such as Spenser's carpe diem, "gather the rose of love, whilst yet is time, While loving thou may'st loved be, without a crime.".

First Edition. Poor copy backed with contemporary leather, now heavily worn with some loss and lacking front board. Rear board scuffed and edgeworn, with text block complete and remaining very secure. Contemporary juvenile reader inscription (1803) to front leaf and rear pastedown; table of contents hand-numbered by the same hand, with sparse ink annotations to margins. All plates present. (In 1777, on becoming vicar of Boldre in the New Forest, Gilpin handed over the headmastership of Cheam School to his second son William Gilpin the younger (1757-1848).) Written with a freshness reflecting 'the particular interest' Gilpin paid to 'the theory and practice of epistolary writing', noted by Alain Kerhervé in his edition of Gilpin's letters to his grandson ('William writes to William', 2014). He begins by explaining that he has been informed by 'Will Farish' (the Farishes and Gilpins were related by marriage) that the account he gave of 'ye Portuguese missionaries' was mistaken, and that they were in fact 'Mahomedan missionaries': 'I mentioned it to Mrs. Gisborne, frm. whom I had ye acount; & send Will. Farish an extract frm. her letter; & I send it open, that you may read it. [not present]' The letter continues: 'I mentioned to Mr. Gisborne, yt. I thought he shd. have said something more, in his Inquiry [ Gisborne's 'Enquiry into the Duties of Men' was published in 1795], abt. Schools, than he has done. Two or 3 letters passed on ye subject between us. I told him of ye little thing you had written on your school. He has a very great desire to see it. If I could only prevail with you to shew it to me, I could give you my opinion abt. shewing it to him.'.

By the author of the Almanach des Gourmands. ; The text stops abruptly on page 374, so a very small part of the index is missing; the last last recipe cited is pâtés chauds. On the other hand, this work does include all 17 plates. The first plate facing p. 25 is waterstained.
