In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. 8vo (217×145 mm). 72 pp. Contemporary pink wrappers, with the author's presentation inscription to Marquis Luigi Rangoni on the front wrapper. Some pale browning, otherwise a good, genuine copy, preserved in a modern slipcase. Presentation copy of a participant's account of the Galvani-Volta controversy, culminating in a verdict favourable to Volta. Carradori's purpose is not merely historical: as the subtitle announces, he seeks to adjudicate the dispute by comparing the experimental evidence advanced by the opposing parties. His conclusion expressly favours Volta against Giovanni Aldini, Galvani's nephew and defender. The publication has an earlier academic history. The Istoria originated as an anonymous submission to a competition on galvanism announced by the Società italiana delle scienze in 1805, in which Volta himself was one of three competitors. Its appearance in 1817 therefore represents the publication of an intervention conceived within the institutional debate, rather than simply a retrospective compilation. Carradori's authority rested partly on his own experimental involvement. In his Account of the Late Improvements in Galvanism (1803), Aldini records that Carradori had initially questioned animal electricity before becoming an energetic supporter of it. He also cites Carradori's experiments on electrically induced taste in two people connected within a circuit, referring to his fifth letter on animal electricity addressed to Felice Fontana. The later judgement in favour of Volta is thus especially revealing when read against Carradori's earlier position: the book preserves the assessment of an investigator who had reconsidered the competing explanations, not the unchanging allegiance of a partisan. The presentation to Marquis Luigi Rangoni (1775-1844) provides a particularly appropriate scientific and institutional association. A mathematician trained by Giambattista Venturi and minister of Public Economy and Education in Modena, Rangoni worked from 1816 to secure financial support for the Società italiana delle scienze following its post-Napoleonic difficulties. He became an honorary member in 1817 and its president in 1822. Carradori, whose membership of the Society is prominently stated on the title-page, had himself been elected in 1816. The inscription consequently links the author's scientific intervention with a recipient actively supporting the institution in which its earlier version had been submitted.
