War Office / Ordnance Survey, Third Edition 1943; reproduced by 17 Map Reproduction Section, Royal Engineers, March 1944, with air information supplied by H.Q. Royal Air Force, Middle East, April 1944. Original colour Second World War military and air-navigation map, approximately 63.9 × 76.6 cm, scale 1:2,000,000, reference M.D.R. 538/10454, marked "Restricted". A scarce wartime sheet covering Upper Egypt and the Nile Valley, the Eastern and Western Deserts, the Red Sea, adjoining Sudan and western Arabia, including the Hejaz and approaches to Jeddah, Mecca and Medina. In addition to towns, roads, railways, tracks, wells, oases, relief and boundaries, the Army/Air edition incorporates operational RAF information including airfields, landing grounds, seaplane stations, seaplane alighting areas and magnetic variation. The underlying cartography was compiled, drawn and heliographed by the Ordnance Survey in 1937 and successively revised during the war; institutional records confirm this precise March/April 1944 issue and reference number. Original folds with light handling and minor marginal creasing; colours remain strong and the map is complete and highly legible. Very good. Location: Tube C: Middle East. …

In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. ALEP [ALEPPO]. 1:10,000 Town Plan Alep. M.D.R. 1513/3909. 17 Map Reproduction Section, Royal Engineers, November 1943, reproduced from French pulls of the July 1941 edition prepared by the Annexe de l'Institut Géographique National au Levant. Large folding colour-printed military town plan, scale 1:10,000, sheet size 63 × 62.7 cm. A highly detailed and institutionally scarce Second World War plan of Aleppo produced for British military use in the Levant, the lower margin explicitly recording "Edition de Juillet 1941" and "Reproduced by 17 Map Repro: Sec. R.E., Nov. 1943, from French pulls," together with the British military reference M.D.R. 1513/3909 and boxed instruction "REFER TO THIS MAP AS: 1:10,000 TOWN PLAN ALEP." The map provides an exceptionally detailed record of wartime Aleppo, dominated by the Citadel and densely built historic centre but extending to the modern suburbs, railway yards and sidings, roads, bridges, institutional complexes, gardens, orchards and surrounding countryside. Relief is represented at five-metre contour intervals, waterways are printed in blue, built-up and cultivated areas in green, and the extensive French legend distinguishes major and minor roads, maintained and unmaintained tracks, paths, railways, public and military buildings, churches and mosques, reservoirs and Christian, Muslim and Jewish cemeteries. Produced two years after the 1941 Syria-Lebanon campaign, the sheet reflects the Allied requirement for accurate large-scale mapping of a strategically important communications and administrative centre close to the Turkish frontier. It is also a valuable record of Aleppo's urban morphology before the enormous post-war expansion of the city and, in light of later destruction, an important documentary representation of its historic built environment. French cadastral and urban surveys of Aleppo from the Mandate period are recognised by modern scholarship as major sources for the study of the city's morphology. Institutional rarity: extensive searches have located related Aleppo military maps but no clearly catalogued institutional example of this exact November 1943 Royal Engineers 1:10,000 issue; the British Library records a different 1941 Alep sheet at 1:50,000, G.S.G.S. 4195, while other collections hold British "Town plans of Syria and Lebanon" and an earlier German 1941 Aleppo town plan. The exact M.D.R. 1513/3909 state should therefore be regarded as scarce and poorly represented in readily accessible institutional and commercial records, though not claimed as unique. Folded with expected fold lines, light handling and occasional minor age marks; complete and very well preserved overall, with excellent clarity and strong colour. In very good plus condition overall. A substantial piece of wartime Royal Engineers cartography and an important historical plan of Aleppo. Catalogue no. 004174.…
