Der Leitsatz des Absolutismus "L'État, c'est moi! - Der Staat bin ich!" wird ihm jedoch fälschlicherweise zugeschrieben. Er festigte die Macht der Krone durch den Ausbau der Verwaltung, durch die Bekämpf…ung der Opposition des Adels und durch die Förderung der französischen Wirtschaft. Die Hofkultur wurde ganz auf die Person des Herrschers zugeschnitten. Der König förderte Künste und Wissenschaften, was eine Blütezeit der französischen Kultur zur Folge hatte. Ludwig XIV. vertrat eine expansive und kriegerische Außenpolitik, so dass Frankreich unter seiner Regierung eine stark dominierende Stellung in Europa gewann. Mit zweiundsiebzig Jahren auf dem Thron war er das am längsten amtierende Staatsoberhaupt in der Geschichte Europas.

Mientras crecía el número de sus lectores, en 1683 dio a imprenta unas meditaciones cristianas y metafísicas El éxito del Traité y el contenido de las meditaciones fueron percibidos como una amenaza intelectual por el gran adalid del jansenismo de Port-Royal, Antoine Arnauld, que, para desmontar sus tesis, publicó primero sobre las verderas y falsas ideas y después unas voluminosas Réflexions philosophiques et théologiques sur le Nouveau système de la Nature & de la Grace, 3 v., Cologne, Nicolas Schouten [i.e. Brussels: chez H. Fricx], 1685-1686. A las objeciones así planteadas, Malebranche contraragumentó publicando estas Lettres, que a su vez serían replicadas y contrarreplicadas por Arnauld y Malebranche, y comentadas por terceros en numerosos opúsculos y folletos.

Originally published in French as 'De la recherche de la vérité, où l'on traite de la Nature de l'Esprit de l'homme, et de l'usage qu'il en doit faire pour éviter l'erreur dans les Sciences' (1674-75), and rapidly enlarged in response to criticism, Malebranche takes the Socratic position that we can never fully understand a universe created by an unintelligible God, but also attempts to link St Augustine and Descartes by proposing a distinction between truths known directly in the Mind, and those understood through the body.
