Summary: Composé en guise de passe-temps durant une grave maladie qui frappa Lipse vers la mi-mars 160…3, «De Vesta et Vestalibus» conclut pour ainsi dire la «Fax Historica», une série sur la culture antique, entamée longtemps auparavant, mais n'ayant pas évolué comme l'auteur s'était proposé. Dans ce bref traité Lipse expose les principaux aspects du culte de Vesta, tels l'origine de la déesse, son temple, la "prise" des vestales, leur formation et leurs tâches, leurs récompenses et peines, leur parure, le Palladium, la fin du culte et les cultes du feu dans d'autres cultures. La méthode de rédaction lipsienne consiste à rassembler des citations pertinentes de la littérature gréco-latine et à les relier ensuite entre elles par des éclaircissements personnels. A ce matériel littéraire sont ajoutées dès la seconde édition de 1609 des sources archéologiques, épigraphiques et numismatiques, reproduites également dans la présente édition. Lipse se vanta dans l'«Ad Lectorem» d'être le premier à avoir traité le sujet de manière exhaustive et systématique. 280g.
