THIS schoolbook edition was reprinted in Italy in the same form at least seven times starting in 1539 (Venezia, Heirs of Ottaviano Scoto). The last sixteenth…century edition was published in Venice by Camillo Pinzi in 1578. Born in Tolentino, near Ancona, Francesco Filelfo studied in Padua under Gasparino Barzizza and Paolo Veneto. He then started a successful career as a private tutor of wealthy families in Padua, Vicenza, and Venice. In 1421 he was appointed secretary to the Venetian ambassador in Constantinople, where he received many diplomatic assignments from the emperor and deepened his knowledge of Greek at the school of John Chrysoloras, whose daughter he married. In 1427 he came back to Venice with a considerable load of Greek manuscripts. In 1428 he was appointed professor of moral philosophy in Bologna, but moved to Florence a year later. His lectures at the local Studio became very popular, but his arrogance earned him many enemies. In May 1433, as Filelfo was walking to his lectures at the Studio, a thug attacked him and slashed his face. Filelfo blamed the attack on Cosimo de' Medici, and when Cosimo was exiled by the Albizzi party in 1433, he urged the signoria of Florence to pronounce the sentence of death on him. When Cosimo returned to Florence, Filelfo's position in that city was no longer tenable. He claimed that one attempt on his life had already been made; and now he readily accepted an invitation from the state of Siena.In Siena, however, he did not remain more than four years. His fame as a professor had grown great in Italy, and he regularly received tempting offers from princes and republics. He decided to accept the most alluring of these, made by the duke of Milan, Filippo Maria Visconti; and in 1440 he was received with honor by his new master in the capital of Lombardy. During his stay in Milan, he composed the Convivia mediolanensia, the famous commentary to Petrarch's Canzoniere, and the celebratory poem on Francesco Sforza (Sphortias).Subsequently he was invited to teach Greek in Rome by Pope Sixtus IV. In his last years, Filelfo reconciled with Lorenzo de' Medici, and returned to the Studio Fiorentino. Two weeks after his arrival, at the age of 83, he succumbed to dysentery, and was buried at the age of 83 in the Church of the Annunziata (cf. G. Giolito de' Ferrari was the first in Italy to publish the first two books of letters, as well as many other works by Guevara. But for the third book he was preceded by Vincenzo Valgrisi who in 1557 issued it in an Italian translation by Alfonso Ulloa, dedicated to Sforza Pallavicino. In 1559 Valgrisi republished the work with some additions and a new dedication to Isabella Gonzaga d'Avalos. Since the ten year privilege granted to Valgrisi had not yet expired in 1560 unlike that of Giolito, Francesco Sansovino issued the third book without dedication and without mentioning the name of Ulloa. The enormous success of his works, made him the first Spanish writer to achieve a status comparable to that of the great authors of antiquity. He was born around 1481 in the city of Treceño and moved in 1492 to the royal court, where he stayed until the mid 1510s. Around 1506 he joined the Franciscan Order. In 1521 Charles V summoned him to serve as preacher in the royal chapel, a post that he occupied, however, only two years later. In 1525 and 1526 he was sent to Valencia and Granada as a commissioner of the Inquisition to evangelize the Islamic population. As a reward, the emperor appointed him royal chronicler.In 1528 Guevara wrote the Libro aureo de Marco Aurelio, followed a year later by the Libro llamado Relox de principes, a reworking of the previous book, both of which became two of the most frequently published works in Europe. In 1529 he was elected bishop of Guadix, and in 1537 bishop of Mondoñedo. Three years later, probably because he felt uncomfortable, he asked for a different position in Valladolid, which, however, was denied to him. His disappointment is clearly manifest in his last works, including the second book of letters, which became more spiritual and ascetic. He died in 1545, while he was finishing La segunda parte del libro llamado Monte Calvario. By that time he had gained international renown and his writing where widely read and imitated all over Europe (cf. E. The Epístolas familiares by Antonio de Guevara, after their first appearance at Valladolid in 1539-1541, became an European bestseller. They were reprinted several times and translated into English (The Familiar Golden Epistles, London, 1574), German (Guldene Sendschreiben, München, 1598-1599), French (Les epistres dorées moralles et familières, Lyons, 1556), and Italian (libro primo, Venezia, 1545; libro secondo, Venezia, 1546; libro terzo, Venezia, 1557; libro primo-quarto, Venezia, 1565).The Italian translation is due to Domingo de Gaztelu, secretary to the Spanish ambassador in Venice Don Hurtado de Mendoza. Manuscript note canceled on g6v. Bound in recent full calf with gilt and blind-tooled panels in period style, with author's name stamped in gilt on upper board. Pomponio Gaurico was the youngest of Giovanni Pontano's students, and the last to carry Pontano's Neapolitan brand of Humanism into the 16th century. (From 1512 he held the chair in Humanistic Studies at the University of Naples.) His treatise on bronze sculpture came out of his studies at the University of Padua, and was published at Florence in 1504. It was quickly recognized as a fundamental statement of art theory, written in elegant Latin (for which Pontano's students were justly famous). The second edition, offered here, was printed in Antwerp, Belgium. It is significant not only as an early printing of a perennial text, but as evidence of the spread of Italian humanism, with its principles of proportion, perspective, and ideal beauty, to Northern European artists and thinkers. It was one of the first books off the press of the young printer, Joannis Grapheus, relying on a text prepared by his brother, the humanist Cornelius Scribonius Grapheus, who had traveled in Italy and probably became familiar with Gaurico's work there. In a preface, Cornelius describes the text as "a rare bird, an uncommon treasure, a textbook useful not only for sculptors or painters, but also to all writers, whether they be poets or historians or philosophers. It is a book to be cherished in the heart, admired, redolent of antiquity and richly abounding in learning.".
