Maij MDV), of this collection of texts (a second edition was issued in Fano by Soncino in 1515), which include the so-called Ilias Latina (?Latin Iliad', a brief abridgment of Homer's Iliad in 1,070 Latin hexameters written between 59 and 68), variably attributed to Baebius Italicus (a 1st-century magistrate who served as governor of Lycia, quaestor of Cyprus, and legate of Augustus in the East, who disguises himself under the fictitious names of Pindarus, Pindarus Thebanus, or Pindarus Ausonius) or to the poet Gaius Silius Italicus (26-101) (cf. M. Scaffai, ed., Baebii Italici Ilias Latina, Bologna, 1997). The booklet also contains Maffeo Vegio's Astynax (also known as De morte Astyanactis), a poem on the death of Hector's son and the grief of Andromache written in 1430 and first published in Cagli in 1475, and a series of classical and humanistic epigrams by Meleager (translated by Giacomo Costanzi), Sidonius Apollinaris, Pomponio Leto, and Tito Vespasiano Strozzi. Of particular historical relevence are also the ancient inscriptions that the editor Abstemius carefully transcribed from ancient monuments in the Fano and Rimini area, as most of these monuments have been lost or damaged today.Maffeo Vegio, a native of Lodi, studied humanities in Milan and law in Pavia. For about ten years he taught poetry and jurisprudence at the University of Pavia. In 1436, he moved to Rome, where he became an enthusiastic promoter of the revival of letters and Pope Eugenius IV appointed him Secretary of Papal Briefs, and later Apostolic Datary and a canon of St. Peter's. He left behind a large body of work in both verse and prose, some of which remained unpublished. The most important of his works are: a continuation of Virgil's Aeneid (written 1428, published 1471); the Liber de significatione verborum in iure civili (written 1433, published 1477), in which he explains many terms from the Digest; the De educatione liberorum et eorum claris moribus libri VI (written 1443, published 1491), a pedagogical work in which Christian moral and religious concerns do not obscure the humanist ideal of cultural education; the De rebus antiquis memorabilibus basilicae S. Petri Romae (written 1455-1457), an important early study of Christian archaeology. Vegio died in Rome in 1458 (cf. P. Bellissima marca tipografica su fondo nero recante il monogramma di Cristo al frontespizio, bordura xilografica su fondo nero al verso di c. a2, xilografia a piena pagina a c. a3r raffigurante Tolomeo, Aristotele, la Sibilla, Santa Brigitta e Reinhardo Lollardo che ricevono ispirazione profetica da Dio Padre, 42 figure in legno a 1/3 di pagina (di cui una ripetuta), una figura a 3/4 di pagina alla c. b2v (copiata da un legno dell'edizione modenese del 1492 circa), una figura a piena pagina a c. d1r e numerose iniziali ornate e maniculae. Legatura posteriore in marocchino verde con impressioni a secco e titolo in oro. Al contropiatto anteriore ex-libris della libreria antiquaria Querzola di Roma. Bellissima copia di tutta freschezza. L'apparato iconografico è lo stesso dell'edizione volgare (Pronosticatione in vulgare) che Niccolò e Domenico dal Gesù stamparono pochi giorni prima, il 9 agosto dello stesso anno. Una terza edizione in volgare, ma con le figure in formato ridotto, verrà stampata dai due fratelli il 20 ottobre.La Pronosticatio, testo profetico stampato per la prima volta in Germania nel 1488 in due edizioni apparse in contemporanea in latino e tedesco, approdò in Italia nella redazione latina per vie e in date sconosciute; sarà poi immediatamente tradotto da un anonimo in circostanze totalmente oscure, corrispondenti o precedenti la prima stampa oggi conosciuta (Modena, Roccocciolo, 1490 o 1492). Le edizioni italiane risultano essere quattordici, in un arco temporale compreso tra il 1490-?92 e il 1532, nelle città di Venezia, Milano, Modena e Brescia, con la maggioranza delle edizioni licenziate a Venezia e a Modena.?All'approssimarsi del nuovo secolo, quando l'opera poteva presentarsi come un allettante pronostico valido per l'intero primo cinquantennio del Cinquecento, furono stampate almeno tre edizioni della Pronosticatione in vulgare in tre città diverse (Milano, Venezia, Brescia). A distanza di un decennio si approprierà del Lichtenberger l'officina veneziana dei fratelli Nicolò e Domenico del Gesù, che sottoscrisse tre edizioni, una delle quali in latino, in un solo anno (1511). L'iniziativa pare provenisse da un ufficiale della Serenissima, forse comprensibilmente interessato alle previsioni di natura politico-militare, soprattutto nei rapporti col Turco, disseminate nell'opuscolo [?] Agli occhi degli editori il Lichtenberger ritorna un lucroso bestseller, di cui si appropria la tipografia veneziana, solo nel 1511. Fra agosto e ottobre i fratelli Nicolò e Domenico del Gesù, titolari dell'omonima libraria nelle centralissime Mercerie presso campo San Zulian, appongono la propria inconfondibile marca tipografica del monogramma di Cristo a tre edizioni, una delle quali in latino. L'iniziativa, affidandoci alla testimonianza coeva stampata in appendice all'edizione Nicolò e Domenico del Gesù 9 agosto 1511, fu presa da quel messer ?Sabastian de Venetia constestabile della Illustrissima Signoria', ossia ufficiale di grado minore dell'esercito della Serenissima, della cui identità rimaniamo però all'oscuro [?] Dunque, nel 1492 messer Sebastiano, venuto a conoscenza del Lichtenberger tramite una delle edizioni incunabole modenesi e intuendone le possibilità editoriali, decise di pubblicarla anche a Venezia. Per qualche motivo che a noi sfugge, l'iniziativa fu però rimandata di una ventina d'anni e solo nell'agosto 1511 trovò un accordo con i fratelli del Gesù, accorti librai-editori, specializzati nella produzione e vendita di libri illustrati e stampe con incisioni [?] Tornando ora ai fratelli del Gesù, nella società per il Lichtenberger svolgono il ruolo di probabili coeditori piuttosto che tipografi, poiché non risulta disponessero di una tipografia in proprio, ma erano soliti rivolgersi a officine esterne, prevalentemente quella dei Nicolini da Sabbio che sot.
