Nineteenth century rebacking with raised blind bands, gilt title on morocco label on two., [colophon: ?In Sole aureo, uici Diui Jacobi Par=//rhisiensis.terminatum est hoc solenne Decreta=//lium volumen Per magistrum Bertholdum Rembolt. . anno Domini millesimo quingentesimo decimo, die vero XIII. augusti. As trained lawyer, Pope Gregory edited and systematised the numerous compilations of early legal pronouncements or decisions, codifying them, while excising portions, or ?Exravagantes? , thereby creating the 1234 Decretalium or Decretals. The work was published by Pope Bonifacius vii. In the present legal example, the Decretals are accompanied by flanking commentaries by Bernardus Bottoniensis and Johannes Andreas; the work also includes Dr. Lodovico Bolognini?s legal tables. This body of canonical law would form the basis of canon law until, in 1917, the law was further elaborated. Posterity would remember Pope Gregory for his Decretales, Papal Inquisition, ultimately with devastating long-term effects on Europe, and his call for the Crusade of 1239 to retake Jerusalem. In 1233 Gregory IX would institute the Papal Inquisition to bring order and to deal with heresy, appointing papal inquisitors - Inquisitores haereticae pravitati ? in 1231. A consequence of the Decretals would become the suppression of followers of Judaism. The doctrine of servitus camerae imperialis, or servitude immediately subject to the Emperor's authority, promulgated by Frederick II directly proceeded from and built on the Decretals. The prevention of Jews to participate in the political life of Christian states continued well into the 19th century. Other population would experience similar suppression or persecution, either directly by popes, or indirectly their emperors or vassal [s kings]., Size : Folio (385x254mm), Text in Latin. (and :) (3) Epistola Gregory connari Pronotary ad Joannes Monacum Cartusine. [11 1/2] pages of text with corrections, deletions & marginal notes, dated at end : Florence, 5 March 1448. 1. A letter of congratulation by the papal Proto-notary Apostolic Connarus to the 'illustrious virgin Cecilia de Gonzaga ' for becoming a Clarissan nun in 1445 at the age of 19. The Mantuan noblewoman (1426-1451) was a humanist scholar famous for her learning & chastity and her outstanding beauty and elegance. Educated by Vittorino da Feltre, she had become an accomplished classicist in a School founded by him in Mantua in 1423. Connarus praises her for renouncing worldly honours & pleasures and for devoting her life to God; he exhorts her to exchange her studies of the poets inspired by her tutor Vittorino for reading the works of the Holy Fathers. The letter would have been sent on behalf of the Venetian pope Eugene IV (1431-47), a friend of art and learning. Cecilia had rejected the wishes of her father, Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, Marquess of Mantua (1395-1444), who wanted her to make a dynastic marriage to Oddantonio da Montefeltro, first duke of Urbino. The marquess had invited Vittorino da Feltre to become tutor to his family of five children and to make Mantua a centre of art and learning. The manuscript is strictly contemporary to the events. Cecilia de Gonzaga died 3 years later in 1451 at the age of 26. (The outstanding early 15th century medallist Pisanello (c1380-c1455) favoured by the Gonzaga dynasty honoured Cecilia's noble character with a portrait showing her with a unicorn struck in 1447, predating this manuscript by one year). 2. Gregory Connarus here recommends the papal letter to Vittorino da Feltre (1378-1446) the celebrated humanist teacher of Cecilia de Gonzaga, amended with notes and comments by the editor Johannes Maguntius. Vittorino was trained at Padua and made his reputation as a teacher of Latin and Greek. In his new role in Mantua, he had permission to found and direct an innovative mixed boarding school for gifted boys and girls of all classes to impart humanist learning and culture; the School, his dream realized, became known as 'La Gioconda' for its happy environment and ensured his lasting fame as one of the first great modern educators. 3. A lengthy theological discourse by Connarus to a Carthusian monk, at a time when the Order was at its greatest influence across Europe. The scholarly manuscript deserves detailed study; it is well preserved; originally bound in a sammelband with consecutive numbers inked in centre blank tailend margins; for manuscripts by Johannes Maguntinus (Johann von Mainz), see : Marie Antonietta Casagrande Mazzoli & Mauro (University of Udine) 'La tabula ad regandum' recording 23 manuscripts by Johannes Maguntinus. Offered jointly: Vittorino da Feltre (Rambaldoni 1378-1446) humanist educator; posthumous circular medallion portrait by Pisanello [Antonio di Puccio Pisano] engraved c1800 by Johann Heinrich Lips. Victorinus Feltrensis Summus. Ex museo Pisanorum Veneto. 7.7 x 8 cm; overall size 15.6 x 14.5 cm; Dutch watermark.
