Penwork cadels to the upper line, significant names in red or blue capitals or reserved in blank vellum on coloured grounds, opening initial in red with penwork, Chi-Rho in red within a blue and red… roundel and frame, painted royal rueda of Castile and León between the witness columns. Plica at foot pierced for twisted silken cords in blue, red, white, yellow and green, retaining pendant lead seal. A rare painted privilegio rodado of Henry II, the first Trastámara king, preserving not only the great rota painted into the document but also the original pendant lead seal and coloured silk cords. This is a grand royal charter in Old Castilian for a Don Sancho, concerning rights in Aranda de Duero, and the survival of so complete and so ceremonially finished an example in private hands is exceptional. - The "privilegio rodado" was the most solemn form of late medieval Castilian royal diploma, defined by its parchment support, pendant lead seal, and the great wheel that affirms its validity. These elements are here deployed with unusual visual force, from the Chi-Rho at the head to the monumental painted royal device placed between the witness columns. - The document belongs to the politically charged opening decade of the reign of Henry II, after he seized the throne from Pedro I. Its chancery formulae and conspicuous heraldic display turn the charter into an instrument of authority as much as of law, asserting dynastic legitimacy through colour, scale, and ceremony, probably intended to impress upon its viewer the majesty of the house of Trastámata, and draw attention away from the fratricidal origins of Henry's power (on his use of charters thus, cf. Obrado, below). Such documents were highly prized even in the Middle Ages for the refinement of their execution, and this example still conveys that intended effect with great immediacy. Composed in the milieu of the Trastámara consolidation, it embodies the close alliance of documentary practice, royal propaganda, and legal privilege in fourteenth-century Castile. - Comparable royal charters of this type survive overwhelmingly in institutional collections and only rarely occur on the market, which materially enhances the present document's scarcity as an object of collecting as well as scholarship. - Some rubbed areas of text and cockling to the vellum, without significant loss to the text apart from part of the dating year. Old folds from storage. Several early modern endorsements on the reverse. Lead seal rubbed but with main details and surrounding legend still discernible. Overall well preserved. - Cf. M. R.
