This edition, published by Giunta as volume two of the Corpus Iuris canonici and accompanied by the Glossa Ordinaria of the canonist Bernardo Bottoni, is arranged in five books on church government, procedure, clerical life, marriage and criminal law. Gregory's Decretales is a fundamental source of medieval Catholic canon law, part of the Corpus Iuris canonici (until 1917). It is a collection of constitutions, papal letters and conciliar canons. It was realised by the Dominican jurist St. Raymond of Penyafort to replace and update the Decretum Gratiani written in 1050.Compared to other illustrated editions of this canonical text, i.e. the first printed edition by Heinrich Eggesteyn (Strasbourg, 1470-72) with 13 illustrations or the 1528 edition by Octavianus Scoto (Venice) with only 5, this one includes more than 180 woodcuts (mostly quarter-page and some half-page illustrations), two full-page woodcuts and a third one with Jesus before Pilate on l. The work was published by Pope Bonifacius vii. In the present legal example, the Decretals are accompanied by flanking commentaries by Bernardus Bottoniensis and Johannes Andreas; the work also includes Dr. Lodovico Bolognini?s legal tables. This body of canonical law would form the basis of canon law until, in 1917, the law was further elaborated. Bishop Ludolf witnesses various endowments to the monastery of the Cistercian nuns in Halberstadt, St Jacobi (also known as Burchardi Abbey). - 1) Isabella, widow of Hermann von Harbke ("hartbeke"), and her three daughte…rs Bertha (wife of Count Friedrich von Kirchberg), Gisela (a canoness in Gernrode), and Mechtild (a canoness in Quedlinburg) gift a mill and several plots of land in Klein-Quenstedt. The cited witnesses are the provost Meinhard, the dean Johann, the provost Anno von Bossleben, the provost Arnold von St. Pauli, the vicedominus Burchard, the provost Albrecht von Borschla, the priests and canons Gerhard and Lentfried, as well as the noblemen Werner von Suseliz, Johann von Alvensleben, Bruno von Aspenstedt, and Friedrich von Harsleben. - 2) The nobleman Bernhard von Aspenstedt gifts a plot of land on Goldbach brook. The cited witnesses are Heinrich von Quenstedt, Bruno von Aspenstedt, Johann von Gatersleben, and steward Ulrich von Quenstedt. - 3) Bernhard Caldune and his brothers gift seven acres in Wehrstedt. The cited witnesses are the noblemen Bernhard and Bruno von Aspenstedt and Friedrich von Winnigstedt. - Exceptionally well preserved, with only two tiny wormholes in the vellum. The seal is nearly entirely undamaged, showing only slight chips to the legend.
