With rota including autograph device of Innocent II and "Bene Valete" mongram. Archival inscriptions on dors…e. Cords from seal partially preserved. One current and three future Popes attest a document during one of the most turbulent periods in the ascent of the medieval papal monarchy: Innocent II confirms the possessions of the Church of St Floridus in Città di Castello, Umbria, in an original bull of 1141, hitherto unknown except by later transcriptions. In his own hand, the Pope adds his personal device to the outer ring of the rota next to what is probably an autograph subscription. The following signatures from members of the College of Cardinals include the autographs of the future Popes Celestine II, Lucius II, and Anastasius IV, making this well-preserved document an imposing expression of the authority of the Catholic Church at the height of the Middle Ages. - At the request of Cardinal Guido di Castello (later Pope Celestine II, a native of the city but not to be confused with Bishop Guido, who died in 1137 or 1142), the Pope addresses Provost Gerard (in office 1116-43) of the Canons of the Church of St Floridus in Città di Castello, confirming the inviolability of its possessions by any figure, ecclesiastical or secular, in perpetuity, on pain of excommunication. The medieval archival inscription on the dorse describes this as a grant of immunity. - Under Innocent II (r. 1130-43), the Papal Chancery reached a pinnacle of elegance and standardisation in the layout of documents. The opening protocol is written in laterally compressed minuscules, the rest of document in a fine Papal Documentary hand. Following the triple "Amen" closing the main text (spaced out over the final line, an authenticating device to ensure that extra text could not be added retroactively), we have the rota: a cross in two circles with the names of St Peter, St Paul, and Innocent II. In the outer ring, the Pope adds his personal device ("adiuua nos deus salutaris noster") in his own hand. Next to this is his subscription, here with elongated ascenders ("ego Innocentius catholice eccl[esi]e ep[iscopu]s s[ub]s[scripsi]"). The distinctive shape of the letter s, with a slightly elongated, slanting tail, also seen in the device in the rota, suggests that the papal subscription is wholly autograph. Bracketing it to the other side is a superbly executed "Bene Valete" monogram. - The witness-list from members of the College of Cardinals consists of individuals attested from other diplomas of Innocent II, including three future popes: Guido of Castello, Innocent's immediate successor as Celestine II (r. 1143-44); Gerhard, Priest of the Church of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, who in turn succeeded him as Lucius II (r. 1144-45); and Conrad, Bishop of Sabina, later Anastasius IV (r. 1153-54). As Cardinals were chosen for their learning, ability to write carried a social cachet, and the individuality of the hands suggests that they are also all autograph subscriptions. - The signing chancery official (sometimes but not always identical with the scribe) is Aimeric, the powerful Chancellor who was instrumental in Innocent's disputed election in 1130, which precipitated a schism in the Papacy betwen him and the Antipope Anacletus II. With Anacletus' faction stronger in Rome, Innocent fled to France, where the support of Bernard of Clairvaux ensured him a favourable reception. In 1132, the Holy Roman Emperor Lothar III took up Innocent's cause, and received in return his imperial coronation from him. Nonetheless, the schism had political consequences throughout Europe, and was not truly resolved until the death of Anacletus in 1138. - This bull from 1141 attests to the period of consolidation of papal power and the rewarding of Innocent's sup.
