Erckmann-Chatrian was the name used by French authors Emile Erckmann (18221899) and Alexandre Chatrian (18261890), nearly all of whose works were jointly written. Both Erckmann and Chatrian were born in th…e département of Moselle, in the Lorraine region in the extreme north-east of France. They specialised in military fiction and ghost stories in a rustic mode, applying to the Vosges mountain range and the Alsace-Lorraine region techniques inspired by story-tellers from the Black Forest. In an armorial half morocco binding with cloth covered boards, gilt detailing to front board and spine, and mottled endpapers. Externally, sound with light rubbing particularly to extremities. Fading to rear board, and the odd mark. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. Only scattered spotting, and some handling marks to the endpapers. Good. Un fort vol. au format in-4 (265 x 188 mm) de 1 f. bl., 2 ff. n.fol., 1 frontispice gravé n.fol., xxxii - 380 pp. Reliure de l'époque de demi-veau olive, dos à nerfs orné de filets gras en noir, doubles filets dorés, roulette dorée sur les nerfs, pièce de titre de maroquin rouille, titre doré, filet en po…intillés dorés en tête et queue, tranches mouchetées. Edition originale agrémentée de très nombreuses gravures sur bois dans le texte venant illustrer cette vasque fresque de Paris et des Parisiens sous le 2nd Empire. Le texte, très varié, est dû aux plus grands écrivains de l'époque. Un des plus célèbres illustrés de la période romantique. Lequel ''ne devait comprendre à l'origine qu'un seul volume''. (in Carteret). Il sera suivi en 1846 par la parution d'un second ouvrage formant le complément du présent volume.
