The heroine, Lucile, is beloved by two bitter rivals, the English Lord Alfred Hargrave (i.e., Vargrave) and the French Duke of Luvois. She loves Alfred, but misunderstanding keeps them apart. Long years after, Alfred's son and the Duke's niece fall in love, are separated by the old feud but finally reunited through the efforts of Lucile, who has become a nursing nun, under the name of Soeur Seraphine. Covers are foxed and soiled, with nicks and creases, and losses to head and tail of spine. Inner joint with a small gap to cover. First endpapers are also a little spotted, but remaining text is clean and bright. Text page lengths and widths vary, as issued, and contents title remains uncut at top edge. A scarce find. The first of these works is the the third edition, corrected of 'Remarks on the Life and Writing of Dr. Jonathan Swift' by John Boyle, Earl of Orrery. Published in the same year as the first London ed. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and with an advertisement leaf to the rear. ESTC T80861 The second work is a 1752 edition of 'The Scribleriad' by Richard Owen Cambridge. First published the year prior. A humorous mock epic poem, in partial imitation of Alexander Pope, John Arbuthnot and Jonathan Swift. The poem is preceded by a dissertation on the mock heroic, and is full of literary in-jokes. She continues 'in your kind letter to me after my dear husband's death you mentioned having still a small sum to pay'. She says she will have the amount placed on credit, and closes the missive with 'believe me dear sir very faithfully, Edith Lytton'.The individual the letter is addressed to is not named.From the library of A. P. Watt & A. S. Watt of A. P. Watt and Son, literary agent of Rudyard Kipling. The charming illustrated bookplate of British literary agent A. P. Watt appears to the front pastedown. Watt is generally regarded as the first true literary agent, when he arrived on the literary scene in the late 1870s. In the publisher's original paper vellum binding, with gilt detailing.
