Editor Metz presents this third edition of the Sandlin text on hearing aid amplification. Chapters on physics and acoustics have remained fairly constant, while updated medical and technological research, professional recommendations, and discussion of amplification with children are included, and some topics have been removed since the second edition. The text begins with a historical overview, followed by physics of sound used in speech, resonance, high-fidelity amplification and compression. A couple of chapters go over technical details of hearing aid operation. Some pre-treatment clinical considerations are covered next, including psychology of hearing loss, device selection parameters, and technology for children. Finally, a suite of chapters discuss the details of implementing and fitting hearing aids according to individual patient needs, including use of real ear measures and fitting formulas, assessment of outcomes, assistive technologies, cochlear implants, and unilateral hearing loss.
