Editor Metz presents this third edition of the Sandlin text on hearing aid amplification. Chapters on physics and acoustics have remained fairly constant, while updated medical and technological research, professional recommendations, and discussion of amplification with children are included, and some topics have been removed since the second edition. The text begins with a historical overview, followed by physics of sound used in speech, resonance, high-fidelity amplification and compression. A couple of chapters go over technical details of hearing aid operation. Some pre-treatment clinical considerations are covered next, including psychology of hearing loss, device selection parameters, and technology for children. Finally, a suite of chapters discuss the details of implementing and fitting hearing aids according to individual patient needs, including use of real ear measures and fitting formulas, assessment of outcomes, assistive technologies, cochlear implants, and unilateral hearing loss. Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Michael J. Metz, PhD, has been a practicing audiologist for more than 45 years, and has taught in several university settings. In partnership with Bob Sandlin, they provided continuing education for audiology and dispensing in California for more than two decades. Dr. Metz has owned and operated a private practice in Southern California for more than 30 years. He has been professionally active in areas such as electric response testing, hearing conservation, hearing aid dispensing, and legal/ethical issues. Dr. Metz continues to practice in a limited manner in Irvine, California.
