'Sven Augustijnen's Spectropoetics' is an essay by art historian and art critic T.J. Demos. Sven Augustijnen's 'Spectres, 2011', a film of roughly one hundred minutes, takes up the haunting of Belgium by the traumatic memory of the country's past
colonial interventions in the Congo, including Belgium's complicity in the violent overthrow and assassination of the Congo's first democratically elected leader Patrice Lumumba in 1960-61. In "Sven Augustijnen's Spectropoetics," T.J. Demos offers an extended analysis of the aesthetic and political terms of Spectres, reading it as a critical reworking and reinvention of documentary possibilities. The essay explores "the poetics of the ghostly" and "the apparition of the inapparent"-terms of Jacques Derrida-that Augustijnen creatively puts to task, showing how a repressed counter-history of brutality, inequality and racism continues to haunt the socially and economically privileged apologists of the official Belgian narrative regarding its colonial history.
