About The Book: *Journal of a Residence of Two Years and a Half in Great Britain* by Jehangeer Nowrojee is a rare and insightful travel narrative by an Indian Parsi who visited Britain in the mid-19th century. Co-authored with Hirjeebhoy Merwanjee, the journal documents their observations of British society, culture, institutions, and technology from a non-European perspective. The authors express admiration for British progress while also critically reflecting on racial prejudice and colonial attitudes. Their account offers a unique blend of curiosity, critique, and cultural comparison, making it one of the earliest examples of Indian travel writing that reverses the colonial gaze on the West. About The Author: Jehangeer Nowrojee (18211866) was a pioneering Indian shipbuilder and steamboat agent from Bombay who studied shipbuilding in England from 1838 to 1841. Upon returning to India, he applied his Western-trained skills during a period of rapid technological and social transformation under British influence. Nowrojee's work symbolized the growing integration of modern science and industry in 19th-century India. He is notably immortalized in an 1857 oil painting by William Henry Baker alongside Oliver Miller White, highlighting his role in the maritime industry and representing the blending of Indian enterprise with Western innovation during colonial times.
