He was my ideal since my commissioning days in 3 Guards. No wonder I followed him into 9 Para Commando when he raised it. He deserves to be honoured officially even at this late stage for his seminal contribution to the very idea of the Indian Army Special Forces. Colonel Ashok Tara, VrC, Retd, The Brigade of Guards (Also awarded the "Friends of Liberation War Honour" by Bangladesh Govt for rescue of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's family including Sheikh Hasina during the Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971) Colonel Megh Singh Rathore, VrC, the very name evokes, awe, admiration and sense of honour and respect amongst those who had the privilege of knowing him as a soldier and leader. Unconventional in thoughts, audacious in planning backed by Dare Devilry in action and boldness in execution of operations defined by his military persona. This son of the soil from land of valour, Rajasthan, was commissioned in Sardar Infantry Battalion of Jodhpur Forces. The same unit where General Sagat Singh one of the most audacious General seen by India (ex CO of 2/3 Gorhka Rifles of my Regiment) was groomed. He was a maverick with a heart of Gold is very much evident from the numerous anecdotes I have heard regarding his exploits narrated by Colonel N S Rathore (later 2IC 9 Para who is also my father In Law) one of the pioneers who joined Megh Singh in the raising of 9 Para SF. Colonel Awadhesh Kumar has deep dived into life and times of Colonel Megh Singh to highlight his audacity, meticulous planning and boldness in conduct of military Operation in 1965 Indo Pak War in J&K with his Meghdoot Force. The ad hoc Force was raised by him in a very short period of time, infiltrating and operating behind the enemy lines, capturing of Aridhok and Nejapir with handful of men, carrying out the Uri- Poonch Link Up and the attack on Thil against a vastly superior enemy force, stand out and bear testimony to his military prowess and leadership. His contribution in Bangladesh Liberation War generally unknown has also been brought out quite vividly. His moral courage is evident from the way he took a stand during an Operational Conference to express his views to the Western Army Commander General Harbakhsh Singh on the ongoing clashes on the LC in J&K in the opening phases of Pakistani OP Gibraltar . His most significant contribution to the Indian Army and the Nation is sowing the seed of the idea of Special Operations in the form of Meghdoot Force and subsequently the raising of 9 Para SF or the "Narayanastra". Colonel Megh laid the foundation stone of the Army Special Forces and is deservedly called the father of the Indian Special Forces. This book is a must read for not only the Special Forces but also for those involved in laying down the policies for raising, equipping, maintaining and operationalizing the Special Forces. He is perfect example of a born leader. Major General Avinash Singh, YSM, Retd, Former Colonel of the Regiment 3 Gorkha Rifles.
