Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Rosemary Crill is a Senior Curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Her publications include Chintz: Indian Textiles for the West and Marwar Painting. Kapil Jariwala is an independent curator whose recent publications include Cultural Ties and Film Fantastic: Indian Movie Poster Art. Jeremiah Losty is former Head of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the British Library, where he curated the Ramayana exhibition in 2008. Robert Skelton is one of the foremost post-war authorities on Indian art, and is a former Keeper of the India Department at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Susan Stronge is a Senior Curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum and has written extensively on Indian art and culture.

De rol van het portret in India tussen 1560 en 1860 diende als een officiële kroniek of ooggetuigenverslag, als een middel voor het openbaren van intieme momenten van het dagelijks leven, en als een instrument voor propaganda. De beheersing van Indiase portretkunst in de Mughal en Rajput tijdperken, bracht een nieuw niveau van stijl en het kunstenaarschap aan het genre. Door de opkomst van het 'waargenomen' portret, grotendeels door Europese invloeden ontstaan, konden kunstenaars uit het Mughal-tijdperk realisme ontdekken, wat leidde tot het 'empathie portret'. Deze beeldde voor het eerst in de Indische kunst het model uit als een psychologische entiteit, met een onthullende kwetsbaarheid en mededogen, of gewoon hoe het model er echt uitzag.
