Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Born in London in 1834, William Morris was a radical thinker whose democratic vision for society and art has continued to influence designers, artists and writersto this day, long after his death in 1896. He was a gifted poet, architect, painter, writer and textile designer, who also founded the Kelmscott Press, the most famous of the Arts and Crafts private presses. Morris's ideas later came to influence the Garden City movement, as well as numerous artists and craftspeople, who sought to negotiate a viable place within the modern world in the troubled years that followed the First World War. His ideals inspired designers, including those who contributed to the 1951 Festival of Britain, with a direct sense of mission to bring the highest design standards within the reach of everyone. During Morris's lifetime, Oscar Wilde thought him 'a master of all exquisite design and of all spiritual vision', while forty years after Morris's death George Bernard Shaw observed: 'He towers greater and greater above the horizon beneath which his best advertised contemporaries have disappeared.'This collection of quotations by Morris, his friends, associates and those who came after, reveals and explores his passionately held viewthat beautiful, functional design should be accessible to all.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Shakespeare and his Contemporaries by Charles Nicholl William Shakespeare and his contemporaries helped create not only a new kind of theatre but also a new form of language. In an age of religious and political warfare, they found expression for what it means to be human. Yet although Shakespeare's life is well researched, the lives of his friends are less well known. In this book, Charles Nicholl explains that Shakespeare belonged to a talented group of writers, poets and dramatists, including Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe, John Donne and Sir Walter Ralegh. Illustrated throughout with portraits, engravings and printed documents, it demonstrates how Elizabethan society valued literary talent as well as how these writers saw themselves.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. 'Look at people and their pets today. Pets tell something about their owners, whether they are bought to make a fashion statement, as child substitutes or as an expression of unconditional love between two sentient beings.' So remarked Robin G ibson, the author of this book , on its first publication in 1998. 'It i s about the various animals that appear in portraits in the National Portrait Gallery, but it is also about the owners of the animals w ho commissioned the portraits. The association of the subject or indeed the artist of a po rtrait with an identifiable pet immediately adds a further dimension to our understanding of the characterisation. ' For example, in a self - portrait by Hogarth there is a pug - probably painted over by the artist and visible only under X - ray - relieving itself on a pile of old master paintings. 'A succinct comment,' Gibson writes , 'on those collectors who preferred second - rate foreign imports to contemporary work s by British artists. ' From the Elizabethan soldier and diplomat Sir Henry Unton to the children of King Charles I; from the little terrier that records Lady Caroline Lamb's first extra - marital affair to Queen Victoria's dogs, photographed with her Ghillie John Brown; from the extraordinary images of ballet dancer Anna Pavlova and her pet swan to the poet and critic Edith Sitwell and her favourite cat, this book charts the British love - affair with the domestic pet. F or this new edition , the naturalist, pho tographer and television presenter Chris Packham has contributed an introductory text that features additional portraits from the Gallery's collections . Amusing and often surprising, this delightful book provides some unusual insight s into the special bond between sitters and their faithful companions.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. "Americans" is an introduction to the history of the United States of America through the art of portraiture. Bringing together over 120 famous American figures, this book draws on the vibrant collections of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington to represent a selection of heroes, writers, statesmen, inventors, educators, musicians, artists and scientists. Together, these portraits comprise a unique overview of the contribution that individuals have made to American politics, society and culture. Accompanied by informative biographies, the subjects are engaging and wide-ranging - Sequoyah, Henry Clay, Mary Cassatt, George Washington, George Gershwin, Edith Wharton, Martha Graham, Cary Grant, Michael Jackson and Martin Luther-King. The portraits, which date from the 1720s to the 1990s, have been selected to represent American men and women of achievement yet they also form a narrative about the genre of portraiture and vary in style and technique, from the sophisticated paintings of John Singer Sargent and the stark photographs of Richard Avedon, to work by self-taught artists such as Thomas Badger and William Elwell. Some portraits include details that tell us about the sitter's accomplishments at first glance, whilst others benefit from insights offered in contemporary descriptions. With illuminating essays from leading transatlantic critics, curators, writers and historians, "Americans" aims to provide a popular and critical analysis of American history in an unusual but accessible format. "Americans" accompanies an exhibition of paintings and photographs from the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, at the National Portrait Gallery in London from 10 October 2002 to 12 January 2003.…
