A dread of seeming to court a relation, from whose favour so much might be gained, checked her frank flow of expression; but, on the other hand, old habits of affection and intimacy forbade too ceremonious a style, and she wrote as follows: 'My Deae Uncle, 'Although, to my great grief, you have not accorded me your forgiveness, I venture to request that you will grant me an interview of a few minutes strictly on business at any hour tomorrow that suits yourself. 'I remain, always, 'Your affectionate niece, 'Caroline.' In the course of the afternoon she received an answer. 'Mr DArcy Manners presents compliments to Mrs Clement Astell, has difficulty in imagining what business can require a personal interview, but will be at leisure to receive her to-morrow, for a few minutes, at three o'clock. Caroline's lip curled, but she muttered, 'He has given me the cue, and I shall adopt it. I can be as cold and formal as himself.' The library at Waldegrave Park was a grand old room, pervaded by a rather gloomy air, which was not unpleasant, and heightened in effect by the carved oak book-cases, reaching almost to the ceiling, and the deep rich colour of the crimson velvet furniture. There Mr Manners generally spent his mornings, and there he was seated, in one of the heavy antique chairs, when his visitor arrived.
