Excerpt: ... 225 CHAPTER XIV. A WARNING. Such was the state of affairs at Ashford Grange, when a visit of two days was received from Lord Haverston, Mrs Vassall's half-brother. He was accustomed to bestow great notice on Caroline, and after breakfast, while she was absent at the school, he remarked that he thought her looking particularly well and blooming, adding that he was surprised his sister had left London so early in the season. Mrs Vassall returned at first an evasive answer; but, after a moment's hesitation, gave the real reason, viz. Caroline's behaviour to Mr Creed, and recounted the history of his unfortunate last call. It was not without some compunction that she exposed TOL. i. 15 the folly of her niece, whom she expected her brother would censure harshly. But so far from expressing any disapprobation, Lord Haverston listened with the utmost complacency, and when she had finished, observed, 'Well, poor Carry, we will not oblige her to marry any man she does not like. She will wait till George comes home from India.' Of this remark Mrs Vassall took no notice, considering it but a revival of an old jest. When, on her return, Caroline's morning employment was made known, she had to endure a great deal of playful raillery from Lord Haverston, between whom and herself a sort of standing warfare existed, on the subject of her whims and caprices. Very soon, however, he discovered that her present fancy was by no means to be treated in the usual style; instead of laughingly parrying his attack, she answered him with unwonted gravity. 'Well, never mind, Carry,' said he, desisting as he saw her getting out of humour, 'I won't tease you any more; but come and walk with me in the shrubbery, and I will tell you a piece of news that I think will please you.'
