Excerpt from The Life of Reason, or the Phases of Human Progress
Arts are instincts bred and reared in the Open, creative habits acquired in the light of reason. Consciousness accompanies their for mation; a certain uneasiness or desire and a more or less definite conception of what is wanted often precedes their full organisation. That the need should be felt before the means for satisfying it have been found has led the unre fiecting to imagine that in art the need produces the discovery and the idea the work. Causes at best are lightly assigned by mortals, and this par ticular superstition is no worse than any other.
