Resting with confidence, full of thankful recollections and of trusting hopes, would we adore that universal benevolence which giveth liberally and upbraideth not. We worship that Power which causeth the sun to shine, the rain to descend upon the good and upon the evil, for the just and for the unjust, which extends its beneficence over the whole surface of the globe, which causes the seasons to bring forth their several productions, and to fulfil their errands of mercy to mankind; that Power which kindles up the sun, and rolls the planets in their courses; which, from the minutest atom to the remotest star, is every where present and every where blessing. We worship that God with ever grateful and ever relying hearts. May our spirits partake of this love, so universal, so exalted, and so enduring! May it penetrate our minds! may it characterise our devotions! may it influence our lives! may it be at once the source of enjoyment to ourselves, and a bond uniting us with our fellow-creatures! May we endeavour to render to all whatever it is within the reach of our ability to bestow, and, by doing that good, reap for ourselves the best good--the joy at beholding the diminution of evil and the production of good, and the extension of human happiness! May we feel for sorrow, for suffering, and for evil, and look upon this world, with all its changing scenes, as still under a presiding Power, which out of evil educes good, ever making evil subservient to good, and which still works out its own munificent plans of happiness, of goodness, of knowledge, and of eternal progress!
