Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Ruth Barton is lecturer in Film Studies at Trinity College Dublin. She has written several books on Irish cinema, including Jim Sheridan: Framing the Nation (Liffey), Irish National Cinema (Routledge) and Acting Irish in Hollywood (Irish Academic Press). She is a regular contributor to arts programs on national radio and is an occasional book reviewer for the Irish Times.

Born in Austria, she began her film career in Czecholslovakia under her real name, Hedwig Kiesler, most notably with the female leading in the controversial, award winning film "Ecstacy" (1933), thought to be the first non-pornographic film to depict sexual intercourse and female orgasm. after fleeing form her first husband, Hedy went to Paris and london, met Louis B. Mayer, who offered her a contact and she moved to America. Her performance in "Algiers" (1938) as well as her breathtaking beauty made her a star. Hecy, however, was far more than just a pretty face or a movie star---at the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil invented a radio guidance system with frequncy-hopping ability for Allied torpedoes.
