Jo Ractliffe is a photographer and visual artist working with photo-based media, video and installation. Since 1991 she works at the Department of Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, where she teaches studio practice and theory. Ractliffe's works has been selected for several critically acclaimed group and solo exhibitions in South Africa and abroad. In 1999 she was the recipient of the 1999 Vita Art prize, awarded for the multi-screen video installation "Love, Death, Sacrifice and so forth". Ractliffe lives and works in Johannesburg. Jo Ractliffe photographs evoke loss, and its relationships to identity, memory, desire, and death. For Ractliffe, as Brenda Atkinson put it, "photography is a very resistant and resisting medium to work with, a medium of non-disclosure."
