IT is my aim in this little volume to refute some of the arguments, which are Opposed to the enfranchisement of commerce.

I do not seek to engage in combat with those who profess the doctrine of protection, but would endeavour to instil sound principles into the minds of sincere men, who hesitate because they doubt.

I am not of the number of those who assert, that the cause of protection is always based upon selfish interests, but I believe that it mostly rests upon error, or rather upon incomplete truths. There are too many persons who dread freedom of trade, to allow of the supposition that their apprehensions may not be sincere.
