This textbook on lasers is suitable for use in graduate and postgraduate courses. Both the theoretical and practical sides of the subject are covered and the text is organized in such a way that students with little or no knowledge of quantum mechanics can avoid the more theoretical sections and still gain an appreciation of the physics of lasers. The principles of operation of a wide range of laser types are covered.

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. "The development of the laser has been one of the great triumphs of science in the twentieth century. The foundations were laid by Einstein in 1917, who pointed out that the equation proposed by Planck to describe the spectral distribution of light emitted from a black body could be derived quite simply by assuming the existence of a hitherto-unknown type of light-emission process which has since become known as stimulated emission. For something like 30 years after this, however, the concept of stimulated emission was only used in theoretical discussions and rarely had any relevance for experimental work. The idea that a system of molecules or atoms could give rise to the amplification of a beam of light follows directly from Einstein's work, but equally well it is easy to show that amplification can only be obtained under a condition known as population inversion. However, systems in thermal equilibrium cannot exhibit population inversion, and it took some considerable time before physicists overcame their instinctive mistrust of nonequilibrium situations."Ex military Library stock so expect to see light wear and possible markings and annotations in the text.
