And so it came to pass, in the year 780, that King Offa decreed a mighty dyke should be built. His men were set their tasks, and when the great earthwork was finally completed, those who had led the labour were richly rewarded.
Among them was Dangoth — a man who rose to wealth and land, an estate that would remain in his family for generations. A warrior, a leader, a name carried down through time.
But was he truly Dangoth, the Saxon warrior of old… or was he Daniel Gough, a boy born in 1944, wandering through history in search of where he belonged?
An ancient parchment decreed it—though no one knew quite how long it had existed—that the land stretching east of Offa’s Dyke, from proud Knucklas Castle in the north to the ruins of Stanage Castle in the south, had always belonged to the Goughs. For generations the family had farmed those hills and valleys, their name etched into the soil as firmly as the Dyke itself.
But whether through curse, misfortune, or simply the slow grinding wheel of bad luck, the Gough estates had dwindled. Piece by piece the land had been sold to settle debts, to pay off one calamity after another, until the proud sweep of their territory became a shrinking patchwork. Fields were lost, then whole hillsides, then the farms that had once fed a dozen families. By the time the nineteenth century dawned, all that remained was a modest parcel of ground known as Panpwmton Farm.Into this world, in the hard winter of 1852, Walter Albert Gough was born. A boy at last. He had two older sisters, fine girls both, but tradition demanded a son to carry the Gough name and hold fast to what little remained of their heritage. Hope rested heavily on his small shoulders from the moment he took his first breath.
One autumn night, when he was barely thirteen, Walter followed a flicker of light down pass the river bank towards the bridge. It was not the warm glow of a lantern, or a candles flicker. This was something colder, whiter—an old light, almost silver. It drifted between the trees, danced on the river stones, dipped into a hollow under the bridge, then he saw a bridge stone support, carved with strange symbols, He had passed this place a hundred times before, yet he had never seen the stone before. He had no concept of letters or words; it meant nothing to him.
Walter touched the stone.
The air shifted. The world fell silent. And from the earth, flashes of memories, battles, death, love, images he did not understand, images and scenes that both enthralled and terrified him.
It was here, one raw November afternoon, that Hannah, Walters eldest daughter and had first met Jacob, Their heads moved close, the anticipation of the first kiss, unfortunately it was their noses rather than their lips that bumped. Then Jacobs' peaked cap hit Hannah in the eye, not a good start, but things got better. But the bridge knew that fate had other plans.

Returns Policy
We ask all customers to contact us for authorisation should they wish to return their order. Orders returned without authorisation may not be credited.
If you wish to return, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order to obtain authorisation.
Returns requested beyond this time will not be authorised.
Our team will provide full instructions on how to return your order and once received our returns department will process your refund.
Please note the cost to return any unwanted order to us is borne by the buyer.
Should your order arrive damaged, not as advertised or faulty, we must be advised of this within 14 days of delivery. Please contact us so we can find the best solution for you.
