J'ai devant les yeux l'exemple de ce grand chercheur, qui vient de mourir et que j'ai d� remplacer ici aujourd'hui. Sans aucun doute, ce n'est pas un des moindres m�rites de Hermann von Helmholtz de s'�tre efforc�, d�s le d�but de sa carri�re, de pr�senter les probl�mes et les r�sultats des recherches scienti fiques, dans tous les domaines qu'il a explor�s, dans des le�ons populaires, � la port�e des savants qui cultivent les autres branches de la Science. Il nous a ainsi fait progresser chacun dans notre propre domaine. S'il semble impossible d'en faire au tantpour les Math�matiques pures, n�anmoins, on doit le tenter dans les limites du possible. Et je ne parle pas ainsi en mon nom seul, mais au nom de tous les membres de la Soci�t� ma th�matique, qui s'est unie depuis quelques ann�es � la Societe des Sciences naturelles et m�dicales, et qui, si ce n'est en titre, peut en �tre n�anmoins en fait consid�r�e comme la premi�re Section.
