First edition. 590 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed on the front flyleaf: "To Sheldon Tannen/With thanks and/best wishes/Sincerely/John O'Hara/'21'/8 August 1949". Tannen was the nephew of "21" Club co-founder Jack Kriendler who took over the club on Jack's death. Novelist and short story writer John O Hara (1905-1970) got his start in journalism and began selling stories ot the New Yorker. His first novel, Appointment in Samarra (1934) was an immediate success, and was followed swiftly by a collection of short fiction, The Doctor s Son and Other Stories, and his second novel, Butterfield 8 (1935). His short stories featuring Pal Joey were adapted into a musical by Rodgers and Hart. He worked in Hollywood as a screenwriter, and "in 1949 O Hara wrote what many critics considered to be his first important work since Appointment in Samarra, the best-seller A Rage to Live …O Hara once said of himself, Being a cheap, ordinary guy, I have an instinct for what an ordinary guy likes " (ANB). He was a regular at "21" and contributed a piece to "The Iron Gate," the festschrift for Kriendler published on the 25th anniversary of the club's founding. Original cloth.
