Spines typically faded, couple of tiny pin pricks in upper joint of Vol 2, a few other slight marks to the bindings. Occasional slight dustiness of text and Vol 1 without front free endpaper, but overall an excellent copy. Both volumes signed by Eliza J. Webley-Parry Jan 1853. *** The scarce First Issue of the First English Edition. A late Haliburton work : a critical history of pre-Independence America. This First English Issue is the only version of the book to be issued under this title. It was originally issued in America in the same year under the provocative title Rule And Misrule. Later issues of the English edition reverted to the American version of the title. *** Haliburton 1796 - 1865, a Canadian judge and politician who later retired to England, was the first internationally popular Canadian author thanks to his wise-cracking character Sam Slick, whose satirical views formed the basis for Haliburton's best-selling Clockmaker series. *** Both volumes are attractively signed by Eliza J. Webley-Parry. Born in 1818 in Kent, by 1853 she and her sister Ellen were living in Treforgan, a fine early 18th century mansion near Cardigan in Wales. In 1859 the sisters moved to a new house, Glanhelyg, which they had commissioned nearby, where they remained until they died, Ellen in 1892, and Eliza in 1894. **** To confirm availability before ordering, please click the link Ask Bookseller A Question.
