First printing of the first trade edition, 161 pp., signed by Jeffers, in a custom slipcase. American poet Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) was a prolific writer of the twentieth century; his bleak and uncompromising style of poetry was formed through his philosophy of "inhumanism", which focused on a rejection of emotion and man, in favour of nature and other creatures in the universe. This volume, per the dust jacket flap, "marks his [Jeffers'] return to.poetry" after a hiatus of seven years, which was marked with the publication of only one work, "Medea" (published in 1946). The blurb continues "[a]s in all his poetry, the long narrative poem 'The Double Axe' and the twenty-seven shorter verses in this volume seethe with violence and risk grave prophetic utterances. Robinson Jeffers sees a world bent on self-destruction and takes a stand for complete political isolationism." The publisher did make it clear that they did not share Jeffers' political views, with a statement to such printed on both the back flap of the jacket as well as on page [ix]. This copy made special by the simple inscription (undated) on the leaf following the half-title: "Sincerely / Robinson Jeffers" in black ink. Not only is it inscribed and has the original publisher's dust jacket, but in addition a prior owner took the care to protect it with a dramatic custom slipcase of quarter leather (see full description below). ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full navy cloth over boards, red lettering on the spine, publisher's device in gilt on the spine, top edge stained red, simple inscription by Jeffers on the leaf following the half-title, stated first printing on the copyright page; large octavo size (9 5/8" by 6"), pagination: [i-ii] [2] [iii-iv] v-viii [ix-x] [1-2] 3-149. In the original publisher's dust jacket of red and beige, summary and publisher's notes on both flaps, back panel with list of other works of poetry published by Random House. Housed in a custom slipcase quarter-bound in three different colours of inlaid leathers, the title stamped in black and "Jeffers" stamped in gilt, the sides covered in brown cloth, the opening (with a thumb notch) trimmed in black leather, the insides lined with red paste-paper. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and a very small spot on the top-edge of the text block, else fine. The dust jacket, which has been price-clipped, is perhaps a bit better than very good, clean and without rips or tears; there is sunning to the spine and folds, and the top edge has overall wear. The slipcase is fine, clean and without wear. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
