Goetschius [1853-1943] is best known for the teaching the theory of musical composition. Perhaps the most important of his theories is that of natural harmonic progression, which was first published in his "The Theory Of Tone-Relations," published in 1892. After a professorship and having the title of Royal Professor bestowed upon him by the King, in 1905 he joined the staff of the Institute of Musical Art (now the Julliard School) in New York City, with his notable students including Bernard Rogers, Howard Hanson, Arthur Shepherd and Lillian Fuchs. Signed presentation from Goetschius on the front endpaper: "For Miss Elizabeth Shannon, for herself and her Library in the Arundel, With friendly greetings, Percy Goetschius. Manchester, N.H. Sept. 1932." Very Good (covers bright; some discoloration to the edges of some preliminary and rear pages; some sort of light oil has been applied to most of the dust jacket (either intentionally or unintentionally), resulting in a darker-brown tone (and causing the discoloration of the pages); other than that (not as bad as it sounds), moderate wear with several short tears. Scarce to find Goetschius' signature! $125.00.
