. (wiki) // " Nine years have passed since Mr. Horst Janssen was first introduced in Japan in 1982. The organizers are very happy to be able now to present an even more comprehensive exhibition of his work. Mr. Horst Janssen (1929-) lives in Hamburg, Germany where he vigorously pursues his creative work as one of Europe's leading artists. His career as a biting satirical witness of modern times extends from the bleak conditions of postwar Germany to the present upheaval following the reunification of East and West. Mr. Janssen abandoned oil painting early on, preferring to limit himself to works on paper: drawings, water colors, and prints. He is important as an artist who has restored the north German tradition of graphica, or line drawing, which goes back to Diirer. Mr. Janssen is one of the most popular artists in Europe, and the world of his drawings, executed with awesome technical facility, has a vibrancy and vigor comparable to the work of Katsushika Hokusai, an artist for whom he has great respect. Mr. Janssen uses a wide variety of subject matter in keeping with the many-faceted brilliance of his draftsmanship: fairy-tale-like fantasies, mercilessly frank views of the reality of sexual relations, landscapes filled with Romantic longing, withered cut flowers which emit a sense of transience, lovers depicted with an unreal beauty, and parodies of famous works of art from all times and places. His creative response to such masters of Japanese art as Hokusai, Utamaro, and Kawanabe Gyosai is sure to be of interest to Japanese viewers. … We hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity for greater understanding and appreciation of his art. May 1991. - The Organizers " // " Rotting flowers, evanescence and decay; the soul of a landscape caught in a few fleeting lines and dashes of ink wash; blatant eroticism, humour and sheer horror, and much, much more-but everything given with superb artistry, as direct reflections of a fertile and teeming brain. Horst Janssen is prolific and verbally gifted as well; thus even the production of his books, postcards, reproductions and posters has become a one-person based, minor industry. His appeal is broad. The last Horst Janssen exhibition at the Munch Museum was seen by more than 50,000 visitors, which for little Oslo is a staggering number. The show tailed off in a series of recent self-portraits, which made an exceptionally strong impression the way they were hung, juxtaposed to some of Edvard Munch's last, self-searching scrutinies of his own image. That exhibition, like the present one, was brought within the reach of the museum (both practically and economically) through the aid of Horst Janssen's old friend Loska Smith-Hald, and through the generous cooperation of the chief organizer in Japan, Mr. Juro Natsume, in his position of General Director of Cultural Affairs for the Tokyo Shimbun. Besides, of course, the good will and support of the artist himself. Now this scenario repeats itself, because the show is presented with the same backstage support. Once again, I am grateful for the good help and support which makes it possible to show a major review of Horst Janssen.
