Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

pp. 5-9. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to William Speed Hill. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: Less than a month ago I submitted to the University of Missouri Press the text of the first volume of The Complete Sermons of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Its principal parts are a historical introduction, a textual introduction, a chronology, the texts of forty-two sermons, and the relevant textual notes. I mean today to say something about the decisions we made concerning the editorial treatment of the sermons, but I also want to speak more generally, to raise some theoretical issues, and finally to propose a new method as being most appropriate for editing the sort of materials I was working with. One of the earliest decisions we had to make was whether we would reproduce the sermons in genetic or clear text. By the term genetic text I mean the same thing that Peter Shillingsburg in his recent book prefers to call a diplomatic transcription, one that allows the reader to observe the genesis or generation of the authors final intentions by reproducing directly in the text all the authors corrections and emendations that is to say, all the remaining physical evidence of the process whereby the author arrived at the language that finally satisfied him. This is conventionally done by using a small number of editorial symbols to indicate such things as cancellation (text enclosed in angle brackets), insertions (text enclosed between up and down arrows), and variant readings (marked off by virgules or slashes).
