Beschreibung

Beschreibung:

Fine content A.L.S. 4to., 2 pages, Appleton, WI, January 27, 1863, providing news of troop movements and the firing and replacement of several Generals, in part: ".I suppose Rosecrans Army is at Murfreesboro yet. You see they cashiered and dismissed Porter. They ought to do the same with Buell or shoot him. When such traitors are out of the Army, we shall do better. I believe Rosecrans to be a true good officer. I understand he has dismissed a many good officers and I hope he will continue to do so until the last sympathizers are out of the Army. It is reported that Burnside has resigned and Hooker has taken his place. Hooker is not ably as good an officer as Burnside, but it seems bad to be changing Commanders so much. Matters do not look encouraging yet I believe we shall succeed by and by." Condition: weak folds with minor fraying at the top margin that affects parts of two letters. Overall very good. Letter. One-page letter on a 7-3/4" x 12-1/4" sheet addressed to a Capt. Goodwin and SIGNED "J. W. Able"[?], "Army Mail Contractor & News Dealer." The writer seems to be proposing a way of "simplifying the army with news matter." The verso is docketed "Hdqrs. Department Cumb[erland] Office. Respectfully referred to Lieut. Bracken A. Chf Army Police, who will make a thorough examination of the mails tonight and report By Command of Maj. Gen. Rosecrans" and SIGNED "R. M. Goodwin." Creases from folding; ink a bit light. Very Good. W. H. Russell [Sir William Howard Russell] (1820-1907), pioneering Anglo-Irish journalist, correspondent of The Times in the Crimea and American Civil War, and during the Indian Mutiny

Anbieter: Richard M. Ford Ltd, London, Vereinigtes Königreich

Verkäuferbewertung 5 von 5 Sternen 5 Sterne, Erfahren Sie mehr über Verkäufer-Bewertungen

According to Russell's entry in the Oxford DNB, while reporting on the Civil War, he was described by one American newspaper as 'the most famous newspaper correspondent the world has ever seen'. The inscription on his memorial in St Paul's Cathedral calls him ''the first and greatest of War Correspondents'. He coined the phrase 'thin red line', was instrumental in the sending of Florence Nightingale to the Crimea, and is said to have written the report that inspired Tennyson to write 'The Charge of the Light Brigade'. The recipient was the proprietor of the Hotel and Restaurant Henry IV, Saint-Germain-en-Laye (which, according to an advertisement in Galignani's 'New Paris Guide for 1879', was 'The only Hotel on the Terrace. / Highly recommended, and old-established / Louis XIV. was born in this House on the 5th Sept. 1638.'). The present item is 2pp, 12mo. In fair condition, aged and worn, with thin strip of glue from mount along the gutter. Folded twice. Signed 'W H Russell'. He enquires after 'un petit apartment libre pour le lundi ou mardi en cas de besoin', at a price 'convenable à ma fortune'. He describes the specifications he requires before noting that M. de Blonetz ma dit ce que j'ai entendu avec plaisir que vous avez garde des souvenirs aimables de moi depuis cet temp terrible 70. 71'. In a postscript he expresses anxiety that 'il y aura une grande foule à St Germain le lundi pour les courses'. It may be that Russell attended the racing with the future King Edward VII: he was, as the Oxford DNB states, 'a member of the Prince of Wales's circle, though his relationship with the prince fluctuated, and he deplored the depravity and obscenity of some of his set'. He coined the phrase 'thin red line', was instrumental in the sending of Florence Nightingale to the Crimea, and is said to have written the report that inspired Tennyson to write 'The Charge of the Light Brigade'. Like Broadley (whose omission from the DNB is as scandalous as his career), Russell was an active freemason. 2pp, 12mo. In trimmed windowpane mount. In good condition, lightly aged, with slight glue staining on reverse. Folded once. Signed 'W H Russell'. The subject is freemasonry (Russell is not known to have shared Broadley's other interests). Begins: 'dear brother Broadley / I am pickling here in the hope that I may be fit for exportation anon & I shall not be in London till my course is over on 17th'. In consequence he will be unable to attend 'the junction of Bros. Lawson Peters & Toole & the promotion of Brs Prince [Helwig?] & Lord Delamere'. Broadley, a distinguished autograph-collector, also merited a long entry in Wikipedia for his other activities. Artikel-Nr. 26361

He mentions that he hopes that she and her husband will come to Washington "before the Grand Army leaves this immediate vicinity for the goal toward which we have been looking so long & so impatiently." A poignant letter. See Delane's entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 16mo. Bifolium. In good condition, with neat thin strip from Victorian windowpane mount adhering to edges of second leaf. Folded for postage. 32 lines, closely written. Presumably with reference to his 'Life and Death of John of Barneveld', Motley begins: 'My dear Delane / Just before leaving England ten days ago in search of health (a fugitive very hard to catch) I begged Murray to send you a copy of a work which was to come out almost immediately. / It was placed in the printer's hands three or four days before my sudden & violent illness last summer, the exaggerated accounts of which you were so very kind in helping me to contradict.' He hopes that Delane will 'think it worthy of attention', and that he will 'find place for a review in the Times of the last work with which I am likely to trouble the public - at least for a long time to come'. He observes that Delane has always been 'most kind to my former efforts', concluding: 'My strength - which has been much used up by the journey hither will not allow me to add more than my sincere wishes for a happy new Year & assurance that I am / Most faithfully Yrs / J. L. Motley'. Artikel-Nr. 24484
