Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Bristol, Rhode Island, July 5, 1728. A Rhode Island Debt Settlement Signed by Future Governor Joseph Wanton, 1728 [Manuscript]. [Rhode Island]. Wanton, Joseph (1705-1780). [Autograph Legal Document Signed, Acknowledging Settlement of a Debt]. Bristol, Rhode Island, July 5, 1728. One manuscript leaf, approximately 12-1/4" x 7-1/2" (31.1 x 19.1 cm), written on one side and docketed on the verso, "Joseph Wanton's Release." Signed by Wanton, with a wax seal at the signature. Light browning, horizontal and vertical folds, and some separation along the fold lines; otherwise legible. A substantial and appealing early Rhode Island legal manuscript. $950.00 An early financial and legal document signed by Joseph Wanton, then a young Rhode Island merchant, acknowledging the settlement of a debt owed by Nathaniel Southworth, Jr., through the transfer of land and money. Wanton would later become one of the most prominent political figures in colonial Rhode Island. Elected governor in 1769, he served through 1775, during the increasingly contentious years preceding the American Revolution. He was also an original corporator and trustee of the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, founded in 1764 and subsequently known as Brown University. This document, executed more than three decades before those achievements, offers an early glimpse of Wanton's commercial and legal affairs. A desirable signed document connecting an important Rhode Island colonial official with the everyday workings of eighteenth-century debt settlement, property conveyance, and regional commerce.…
