Indian Economy: A Retrospective View - Hardcover

This book of late Manu Shroff contains his assorted articles and lectures on different aspects of the Indian economy in its transition from the highly interventionist regime to a liberalised open economic system and also some international issues which had a bearing on the Indian economy. The first part of the book focuses on the variegated dimensions of the Indian economic landscape in its current phase when his articles were published and in prospect. The second part addresses the international repercussions of economic development with emphasis on capital flows, international monetary issues and globalisation which all radicalised the approach to economic policy as distinct from the autarky which characterised the period up to 1980s. Academic writings of Manu Shroff compiled in this volume have been edited by Deena Khatkhate.

Manu Shroff was a former member and policymaker of the Committee on Financial System Reforms and the Indian Finance Commission, where he was involved in shaping national, international, and federal aspects of India's financial and monetary policy. He represented India on the World Bank Board as alternate executive director and later joined as assistant secretary of the World Bank's Development Committee. After his career in public service, he was professor at the Indian Management Institute in Ahmedabad and editor of the Economic Times. Deena Khatkhate is a former director of research at the Reserve Bank of India, a former assistant director at the International Monetary Fund, and a former senior consultant for the United Nations and the World Bank. He has written numerous articles on economic development and monetary policy, which have appeared in publications such as Economic and Political Weekly, the Journal of Post-Keynesian Economics, and Oxford Economic Papers. He is the author of Money, Finance, Political Economy: Getting It Right and Ruminations of a Gadfly.
