Although poverty has decreased over the past two centuries, about 40 percent of the world's population still lives on less than $2 per day. Approximately one in seven people - just under one billion - subsist on less than $1 per day. The most extreme cases of poverty surface in the least developed countries of the world, particularly in heavily populated South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, as well as in rural areas within those regions. Sylvia Whitman has written several books for young adults and numerous articles for publications including The Orlando Sentinel, Southern Discourse, The National Culinary Review, and Writer's Digest. She obtained an M.A. in Arab studies from Georgetown University and an M.A. in American studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Foreword author Steven N. Durlauf is professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin and former director of the Economics Program of the Santa Fe Institute.
