At 14:28 on May 12, 2008, an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale severely jolted Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province, and the tremors were felt in many other parts of the country. Repeated aftershocks further traumatized a1ready devastated areas. At this time of colossal natural disaster, the Chinese government's response to the emergency was immediate. Premier Wen Jiabao arrived at the disaster-stricken area just four hours after the quake had first hit. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers and policemen were swiftly mobilized to rescue lives. Innumerable disaster medical assistance teams also rushed to the sites, day and night. Funds were immediately allocated for disaster relief. Abundant disaster-relief materials were delivered into the disaster zones. The disaster has brought immense pain to the Chinese people, yet the earthquake has also united the entire nation. In the midst of this disaster, the hearts of all Chinese people beat as one. Innumerous moving scenes have molded into one spirit, a spirit more powerful than the earthquake. Since the Wenchuan earthquake occurred, relief supplies, from cotton-padded clothing to medicines, from plasma to machines, have been very quickly gathered around China. Cars, trains and airplanes loaded with relief supplies and rescue teams set out for quake-hit areas within the shortest possible time from coastal and inland China, from cities and rural areas. Meanwhile, across the whole country, people have been queuing up in front of donation centers, blood-donation buses, or any place they can express their love. The Chinese people will also cherish the memory of the selfless support from the international community. This book is an expression of love toward the victims of the tragedy. All proceeds from this book will be donated to the quake-stricken areas.
