Tsubo-niwa, or courtyard gardens are small, interior gardens which play an significant role in the ideal Japanese home. Often seen in classical machiya townhouses, (often called “Eel’s bed” due to their thin and long rectangular shape), temples and shrines and located in the inner part of the house, courtyard gardens provide both functionality such as ventilation and lighting and add natural comfort to daily life. Katsuhiko Mizuno was born in Kyoto in 1941. Since 1969, he has been working to capture the beauty of Kyoto's natural and cultural landscape. He has published 170 books, most of which are sold successfully in the world. He is also a member of the Japan Photographers Association.
