This children's book tells the story of EVIE, a labrador, whose daddy teaches her the importance of picking up litter, keeping the community clean and being a good citizen as well as “a good girl.” Authored by Susan Harp and Illustrated by Jon Siau this book was originally a project of Keep Evansville (Indiana) Beautiful. a community environmental organization. This book teaches the importance of picking up and preventing litter in our community. Susan Harp is a teacher at Dexter Elementary in Evansville. She began her teaching career in 1978 and has taught kindergartners for 34 years. Susan and her husband Steve are active volunteers in their neighborhood and community. They received the Adopt-A-Spot of the Year Award from Keep Evansville Beautiful in 2003 and again in 2006. Through their efforts with KEB in the Adopt-a-Spot and Great American Cleanup campaigns, they became aware that more volunteers were needed to keep the community beautiful. Susan knew that educating young students was a vital component in her efforts to get more people involved in the community. The EVIE character was created by Susan as a mascot that would appeal to all age levels. The Harps have trained, shown, and been owned by numerous Yellow Labradors since 1977. They believe dogs have the ability to bring out the best in people.
